The deal that paired Walgreens and Alliance Boots with wholesaler AmerisourceBergen has received the required regulatory clearances, the companies announced Friday.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — The deal that paired Walgreens and Alliance Boots with wholesaler AmerisourceBergen has received the required regulatory clearances, the companies announced Friday. 

The regulatory clearances permit both Walgreens and Alliance Boots the purchase of up to 7% of the fully diluted equity of AmerisourceBergen in the open market, and the exercise of two warrants for 16% in the aggregate of the fully diluted equity of AmerisourceBergen in 2016 and 2017.

VALLEY FORGE, Pa. — AmerisourceBergen on Thursday elected Lon Greenberg, 62, to its board of directors, effective immediately. Greenberg fills the vacancy created by Charles Cotros’s retirement from the board in February 2013. Greenberg also joined the audit and corporate responsibility committee and finance committee of the board. AmerisourceBergen's board of directors is currently comprised of 10 directors.

Bi-Lo Holding, parent company of Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie grocery stores, on Tuesday announced a long-term agreement under which Keene, N.H.-based C&S Wholesale Grocers will provide warehouse, transportation and most procurement services for all 480 Winn-Dixie stores and continue providing services to all 206 Bi-Lo stores.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Bi-Lo Holding, parent company of Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie grocery stores, on Tuesday announced a long-term agreement under which Keene, N.H.-based C&S Wholesale Grocers will provide warehouse, transportation and most procurement services for all 480 Winn-Dixie stores and continue providing services to all 206 Bi-Lo stores.

Cardinal Health and McKesson separately announced the renewal of their pharmaceutical distribution agreements with CVS Caremark.

DUBLIN, Ohio — Cardinal Health and McKesson separately announced the renewal of their pharmaceutical distribution agreements with CVS Caremark.

Under Cardinal Health’s renewed agreement, the wholesaler stated that it will supply pharmaceuticals to a network of CVS Caremark's retail pharmacies and distribution centers through mid-2016. The stores and distribution centers serviced under the new arrangement are essentially the same as those serviced in the prior arrangement.

But with the announcement that the co-joined Walgreens/Alliance Boots had signed a 10-year distribution deal with wholesaler AmerisourceBergen, that included an equity stake to boot, well, it seemed that many analysts on Wall Street finally got it.

Walgreens and Alliance Boots entered into a 10-year contract with wholesaler AmerisourceBergen on sourcing pharmaceuticals last week. But that's not all. Besides the long-term contract, Walgreens and Alliance Boots will have the option on a potential 23% equity stake in ABC in three years.

The deal takes pharmaceutical buying leverage to the stratosphere and changes the face of more than one health service industry. As Adam Fein, president of Pembroke Consulting, noted in a live television interview on Fox Business' "Money With Melissa Francis": "Three of the largest companies in the pharmaceutical industry have come together and built the single largest buyer of prescription drugs in the world," he said.

Walgreens will no longer source branded prescription medicines directly from suppliers beginning in September, the Chicago-based retailer announced as part of a significant partnership between Walgreens, Alliance Boots and AmerisourceBergen that includes Walgreens and Alliance Boots potentially taking a 7% stake in the Pennsylvania wholesaler.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens will no longer source branded prescription medicines directly from suppliers beginning in September, the Chicago-based retailer announced Tuesday as part of a significant partnership between Walgreens, Alliance Boots and AmerisourceBergen that includes Walgreens and Alliance Boots potentially taking a 7% stake in the Pennsylvania wholesaler. Walgreens will begin sourcing generic medicines from AmerisourceBergen beginning in the calendar year 2014.

Of the eight, Douglas Conant was up for election before shareholders for the first time. AmerisourceBergen's board voted Conant in on Jan. 2.

When Supervalu announced this past summer a review of strategic alternatives, its goals were to improve its business, better position the company for the future and create the best opportunity to deliver shareholder value. This effort has led to the sale of 877 stores to AB Acquistion.

Following the sale, Supervalu will consist of its wholesaler business, which serves 1,950 stores across the country; Save-A-Lot with approximately 1,300 stores across 35 states; and Supervalu's regional retail food banners Cub, Farm Fresh, Shoppers, Shop 'n Save and Hornbacher's.

"What this means … is the company is smaller," Sales said. "And we exit with a much smaller balance sheet to ensure liquidity going forward," he said. This sale will not be followed by any further divestitures, Sales said. "We're not shopping any other assets."

Drug wholesaler H.D. Smith has finalized its purchase of a wholesale company based in California.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Drug wholesaler H.D. Smith has finalized its purchase of a wholesale company based in California.

H.D. Smith said Friday that it had completed its acquisition of Stockton, Calif.-based Valley Wholesale Drug, which it will run as a wholly owned subsidiary. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but day-to-day operations at Valley will be run by its CEO, Stephen Shoneff.

AmerisourceBergen on Thursday reported that in its fiscal-year third quarter ended June 30, diluted earnings per share were 71 cents, an 8% increase over the prior-year quarter.

VALLEY FORGE, Pa. — AmerisourceBergen on Thursday reported that in its fiscal-year third quarter ended June 30, diluted earnings per share were 71 cents, an 8% increase over the prior-year quarter.

AmerisourceBergen's Specialty Group had another strong quarter with revenues up 8%, driven by another particularly strong performance in third-party logistics and in the company's vaccine and physician distribution business. Specialty Group represents significant opportunity for the wholesaler, Steven Collis, AmerisourceBergen president and CEO, told analysts.
