SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Thursday announced it would invest $135 million in its 2013 capital expenditure program, an 8% increase compared to the year prior. 

“To position our company for continued growth, we have made record investments in our store base,” Jonathan Weis, Weis Market's vice chairman, told shareholders during the grocer's annual meeting held here. In 2013, the company is planning 37 major projects, including four new stores, 15 major remodels and 17 remodels.

The study, by Deloitte, found that consumer products executives expect growth through warehouse club retailers to outpace those of other retail channels, including mass merchandise, supermarkets and online retail.

NEW YORK — Consumers showed more confidence in October as a recovery in the housing market indicated a greater willingness to spend — especially among people who shop through multiple channels — but some headwinds remain, and the issues in Congress could threaten the gains, according to a new report by Deloitte.

The monthly Deloitte Consumer Spending Index rose significantly last month, to 4.02, from September's 3.54. The index measures tax burden, initial unemployment claims, wages and home prices.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Thursday announced it will invest $125 million in its 2012 growth program, a 25% increase compared with 2011.

"Our budget includes two new stores and 18 major remodels," Weis Markets vice chairman Jonathan Weis said. "In addition, we expect to soon complete the purchase of three Genuardi's units near Philadelphia which we hope to reopen later this summer."

PALM BEACH, Fla. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores has elected new officers for the coming year.

For the 2012-2013 term, NACDS chairman Bob Loeffler, who also serves as chief administrative officer of H-E-B, will be succeeded by Walgreens president and CEO Greg Wasson. Thrifty White Pharmacy president and CEO Bob Narveson was elected as vice chairman, while Rite Aid president and CEO John Standley was appointed as treasurer, as well as a member of NACDS' executive committee. Wasson, Narveson and Standley will serve one-year terms.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Franklin Brown, the former vice chairman at Rite Aid, was freed from jail on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

Brown, who was initially sentenced to 10 years in prison for taking part in a $1.6 billion accounting scandal, was released following a resentencing hearing. He served six years of his sentence. An appeals court overturned Brown's sentence in May, AP said.

Shirley will retire from P&G, effective Jan. 1, 2012. NEW YORK — The Deloitte Consumer Spending Index rose to more than 4% during the month of February, thanks to slight improvements in two sectors.

The index attempts to track consumer cash flow as an indicator of future consumer spending and is comprised of four components: unemployment claims, tax burden, real wages and real home prices. It rose to 4.02% from 3.92% in January.
