Bi-Lo Holding, parent company of Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie grocery stores, on Tuesday announced a long-term agreement under which Keene, N.H.-based C&S Wholesale Grocers will provide warehouse, transportation and most procurement services for all 480 Winn-Dixie stores and continue providing services to all 206 Bi-Lo stores.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Kerr Drug's philanthropic arm is donating used company vehicles to a nonprofit group that gives the cars to low-income families, the company said Friday.

On Nov. 10, Kerr Cares for Kids donated a car to Wheels4Hope, saying it was the third vehicle donated to the organization this year. In the spring, it donated two Dodge Caravans to the organization. While the vans had more than 200,000 miles on them, the company said they were well-maintained and in good condition. All three vehicles received repairs and have since been given to families.

HERSHEY, Pa. — Hershey and Ferrero have formed a joint warehousing, transportation and distribution initiative in North America.

The two companies will work together to maximize corporate social responsibility efforts and expect to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption in warehousing and freight, with fewer vehicle trips needed to move products to customers.

Productivity improvements from this initiative are expected to be seen in 2012. This alliance does not encompass manufacturing, selling or marketing activities, Hershey and Ferrero noted.

The National Retail Federation warned federal transportation officials that transportation costs would increase by up to 20% in some cases if a proposal to limit the number of hours truck drivers spend behind the wheel each day goes into effect.

WASHINGTON — The National Retail Federation warned federal transportation officials that transportation costs would increase by up to 20% in some cases if a proposal to limit the number of hours truck drivers spend behind the wheel each day goes into effect.

In addition to dramatically increasing costs, the safety proposal also would make highways a little less safe for the general public by putting more trucks on the road during the most congested hours, the NRF argued.

Americans are hard-pressed these days to call in sick, especially for something as innocuous as a cold or even the flu. A recent CareerBuilder survey found that nearly 72% of workers typically go to work when they are sick. Workplace pressures and “presenteeism” may be causing workers to go in under the weather, as more than half (55%) of workers said they feel guilty if they call in sick.


The CareerBuilder survey was conducted nationwide from Nov. 15 to Dec. 2, 2010, among more than 3,700 workers.

Subject to closing conditions and regulatory approvals, the sale is expected to close Dec. 31.
