NEW YORK — As part of the cleanup and relief effort in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, one New York City public school teacher is trying to do her part to help moms bring some normalcy back into their lives.

Building on the belief of “look good … feel good,” Jamee Schleifer, a dance teacher at PS 253 (3D Dance Company, Momz N Da Hood) is turning to pharmacies and cosmetic companies in an effort to collect makeup for the moms of students at PS 253. The goal: to make “kits” to give to 800 children to give to their moms.

Over the past four months, 24 contestants from across Texas have been working hard to adopt healthy habits and shed pounds, and on Sunday H-E-B named Alison Spangler from San Antonio as the $10,000 grand-prize winner of its first-ever Community Slim Down Showdown competition.

SAN ANTONIO — Over the past four months, 24 contestants from across Texas have been working hard to adopt healthy habits and shed pounds, and on Sunday H-E-B named Alison Spangler from San Antonio as the $10,000 grand-prize winner of its first-ever Community Slim Down Showdown competition.

Alison lost 48 lbs and slimmed down from a size 24 to a size 16. A graphic design teacher at John Paul Stevens High School, Alison said her lifestyle has changed completely since she began the competition in June.

The Consumer Healthcare Products Association on Thursday identified Tammy Walsh as the newest mom to join its Five Moms campaign to raise awareness of teen cough medicine abuse among parents.

WASHINGTON — The Consumer Healthcare Products Association on Thursday identified Tammy Walsh as the newest mom to join its Five Moms campaign to raise awareness of teen cough medicine abuse among parents. Walsh is a mother of two teenage boys and a high school math teacher from Northport, N.Y.

According to the 2011 Monitoring the Future report released Wednesday, nearly 5% of teens have abused OTC cough medicines to get high over the past year. While overall abuse has leveled off for eighth and 10th graders, it has declined among 12th graders.
