NEW YORK — Soft housing prices drove down the Deloitte consumer spending index for the month of October, Deloitte said Wednesday.

The index, which is comprised of four components — tax burden, initial unemployment claims, real wages and real home prices — fell to 4.63%, from an upwardly revised gain of 4.84% a month ago.

But Deloitte said that the drop is no reason to give up hope on the holiday season.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. Dollar Tree on Wednesday announced that it has completed its purchase of the assets of 86 Dollar Giant stores for approximately $52 million in cash, plus the assumption of certain liabilities.

 

This marks Dollar Tree's first expansion of retail operations outside of the United States.

The suggested retail prices range from $3.99 to $6.99.

Now that more drug stores have moved into the grocery business, consumers are gaining more convenient access to food.

As a result, drug stores, which have always been synonymous with health and wellness, also have a tremendous opportunity to meet the nutrition needs of time-starved shoppers by stocking their shelves with healthier foods.

Food manufacturers, like Kellogg, see an opportunity for retail pharmacies to help reinvent the way groceries are merchandised to shoppers and help consumers make better decisions when buying food.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — There is a direct correlation between the amount of a patient's out-of-pocket co-pay and prescription abandonment, according to the findings of a CVS Caremark-sponsored study published this week in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The study also found that e-prescriptions are more likely to be abandoned at retail compared with handwritten prescriptions.

WASHINGTON — October was a pleasant surprise for retail and food services, as the advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for that month — announced Monday by the U.S. Census Bureau — showed increases that rose above expectations. Sales rose to $373.1 billion, up 1.2% from last month and 7.3% higher than October 2009 sales.

Total sales for the August through October 2010 period were up 6.3% from the year-ago period, and the August through October 2010 percent change was revised from 0.6% to 0.7%.
