The entire retail store is a diabetes destination, and pharmacists are critical in educating and communicating with consumers to help them and their loved ones better manage the chronic disease. That was one of several important messages that industry leaders expressed during Drug Store News’ 8th Annual Diabetes Roundtable discussion on Tuesday in New York at the New York Athletic Club. More than 100 leading industry players gathered for the event, which also included the 12th Annual Industry Issues Summit in the afternoon.

NORTHFIELD, Ill. — Kraft filed an arbitration proceeding against Starbucks on Monday after the java giant attempted to end an agreement with the company.

Kraft claimed that it boosted Starbucks' retail grocery coffee business since 1998, which has garnered approximately $500 million in annual revenues. Kraft also is demanding that Starbucks compensate the company for the fair market value of the business, plus a premium of up to 35% of that value.

WASHINGTON — This Black Friday weekend proved to be a help to retailers, as shopper traffic and spending both increased, the National Retail Federation said.

While 212 million shoppers visited stores and websites this weekend, up from 195 million shoppers last year, the average shopper spend totaled $365.34 this weekend, a 6.4% increase from last year. Total spending reached an estimated $45 billion, NRF said.

CULVER CITY , Calif. — A documentary that examined the controversial death and cover-up of celebrated NFL star-turned-Army-ranger Pat Tillman, who was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan, will arrive on Blu-ray and DVD.

"The Tillman Story," which was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, is slated to hit retail on Feb.1, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced.

NEW YORK Toys continue to dominate wish lists this holiday season, according to a new poll by Harris Interactive.

Of 3,084 U.S. adults surveyed online between Oct. 11 and 18, 53% of respondents said that they plan to purchase toys as gifts this year. What's more, nearly 3-out-of-4 consumers in a household with children (73%) said they will purchase toys as gifts this year.

SAN FRANCISCO — A new analysis indicated that retailers should expect a modest increase in sales despite wavering consumer confidence.

The report, developed by global management consulting firm Kurt Salmon Associates, projected 2.1% to 2.6% growth in personal consumption expenditures for fourth quarter 2010. The analysis also showed spending on durable and nondurable goods will continue to outpace spending on services this holiday season.

DUBLIN, Ohio Cardinal Health is looking to expand the pharmaceutical segment of its business by acquiring a pharmaceutical distributor serving the New York metropolitan area.

The company said its acquisition of Kinray for $1.3 billion in an all-cash transaction would significantly expand its ability to serve retail independent pharmacies in the northeastern United States. Kinray currently serves more than 2,000 retail independent pharmacy customers as a distributor of both branded and generic pharmaceuticals.

NEW YORK — Soft housing prices drove down the Deloitte consumer spending index for the month of October, Deloitte said Wednesday.

The index, which is comprised of four components — tax burden, initial unemployment claims, real wages and real home prices — fell to 4.63%, from an upwardly revised gain of 4.84% a month ago.

But Deloitte said that the drop is no reason to give up hope on the holiday season.

The study also found that e-prescriptions are more likely to be abandoned at retail compared with handwritten prescriptions.
