NEW YORK — For every $100 in fraudulent transactions, retailers incurred a “true” cost of $230, according to a new study released Tuesday by LexisNexis Risk Solutions.

According to the study, retail merchants and financial institutions reported an overall decline in fraud rates and transactions while total retail sales rose. Consumers also experienced a decline in fraud losses overall but the average time it took to resolve fraud issues rose by 57% and the out-of-pocket costs of fraud rose by $244.

PHILADELPHIA — Bills proposed in Pennsylvania's state legislature would allow patients to have their prescriptions filled through mail-order and at community pharmacies for the same price.

House Bill 511 and Senate Bill 211, which promoters said are designed to give a "booster shot" to local pharmacies and save jobs, are the latest episode in what appears to be a growing battle between pharmacy benefit managers and retail pharmacies.

WASHINGTON — Branded drugs sold under their generic names at a reduced price can reduce retail and wholesale drug prices, according to a new report by the Federal Trade Commission.

The FTC report found that when an authorized generic is introduced onto the market, it can lower the expected profits of the generic drug's manufacturer and, over the longer term, affect generic manufacturers' decisions to challenge patents covering branded drugs with low sales, though patent challenges by generic drug makers "remain robust."

Same-store sales at Rite Aid increased by 2.5% for the month of August compared with August 2010, the retail pharmacy chain said Thursday.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Same-store sales at Rite Aid increased by 2.5% for the month of August compared with August 2010, the retail pharmacy chain said Thursday.

This included a 2.9% increase in front-end same-store sales — including 1.5% coming from sales related to Hurricane Irene — and a 2.3% increase in pharmacy same-store sales, offset by 132 basis points, due to new generic introductions.

The 2 g of sweet goodness comes naturally from real dark chocolate, the company stated.

The NuGo Slim bars contain 15 g of protein and have 180 calories and 2.5 g of saturated fat. Chicory root, a natural dietary fiber, adds 9 g of fiber and naturally sweetens the body of the bar.

Anatabloc contains the dietary ingredient anatabine citrate, an alkaloid found in a variety of plants in the Solanaceae family, including the tobacco plant, as well as in eggplant, green peppers and green tomatoes. Anatabine citrate, combined with vitamins A and D3, is believed to assist the body in maintaining anti-inflammatory support, the company stated.

SEATTLE — Regional retail pharmacy chain Bartell Drugs has launched its flu vaccination campaign, the Seattle-based company said Tuesday.

Bartell said it would offer a full schedule of in-store vaccinations for individuals on a walk-in basis and a program servicing area businesses. The "in-the-workplace" vaccination program, now in its fifth year, serves businesses with 25 or more employees.

In addition to regular vaccines, the chain is offering Sanofi Pasteur's Fluzone High-Dose vaccine designed for patients 65 and older.

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General results showed that low-end consumers have some spending power and a taste for its brand of discount retail.

Sales increased 11.2% to $3.58 billion at the company’s 9,641 stores, while same-store sales increased 5.9% and net income increased 25% to $181 million, excluding nonrecurring charges related to the early repayment of debt. On that same basis, earnings per share increased to 52 cents, four cents better than analysts expected and nearly 24% higher than the prior-year profit of 42 cents.

Nutrition 21 on Friday announced that it has filed a voluntary petition for relief under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

PURCHASE, N.Y. — Nutrition 21 on Friday announced that it has filed a voluntary petition for relief under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

The company does not have sufficient cash to meet a required redemption of its Series J 8% Convertible Preferred Stock on Sept. 11, 2011, for $17.8 million.

Nutrition 21 plans on selling all, or substantially all, of its assets. During the pendency of Nutrition 21's Chapter 11 proceedings, the company will remain in possession of its assets and will continue to operate its business.

Walgreens has renewed its lease on the ground floor of the Empire State Building, and exchanged 10,000 sq. ft. of retail space on the concourse level to 10,000 sq. ft. on the second floor near the observatory exit elevators, according to a report published by REBusiness Online Thursday.
