NEW YORK — President Barack Obama's re-election bid got a dose of support from the cofounder of one of the country's largest retailers, according to published reports.

Speaking at the Democratic National Convention, former Costco Wholesale CEO and cofounder Jim Sinegal said Obama "understands what the private sector needs to succeed," The Seattle Times quoted the co-founder of Issaquah, Wash.-based Costco as saying.

NEW YORK — Global consumers' intent to buy food and beverages online has jumped 44% in two years, and more than one-quarter (26%) said they planned to purchase food and beverage products by way of a device with Internet access — such as a computer, mobile phone or tablet — in the next three to six months, according to Nielsen.

SAN FRANCISCO — McKesson on Thursday announced that Brian Tyler has been appointed EVP corporate strategy and business development, effective immediately. Tyler succeeds Marc Owen, who joined McKesson Specialty Health as president earlier this year. Tyler will remain president of McKesson’s U.S. Pharmaceutical business while the company searches for his successor.

CHICAGO — Market research firm SymphonyIRI Group has named former Procter & Gamble executive Beverly Grant as president of Retail Solutions.

She will report to Mark Parise, president of IRI, SymphonyIRI.

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu on Monday announced Robert Bly will join the company as president of Shoppers, a 56-store division in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C., market.

Bly is expected to begin his new role on Aug. 22 and will report to Chuck Elias, SVP retail operations. Bly replaces Tim Lowe, who recently accepted a new leadership role in Supervalu's merchandising organization.

NEW YORK — Pfizer will be the next consumer healthcare company to reach the market with a switched proton-pump inhibitor. Pfizer on Monday afternoon announced that it has entered into an agreement with AstraZeneca for the over-the-counter rights to Nexium.

GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. — Kinney Drugs announced on Tuesday that Jim Spencer, formerly VP retail operations, has been promoted to COO.

He will report to Bridget-ann Hart, president of Kinney Healthcare Services. In his new position, Spencer is responsible for overseeing retail and pharmacy store operations and the retail merchandising department. He is responsible for the ongoing development of pharmacy and retail services.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Walgreens' e-commerce president Sona Chawla has been appointed to serve on the board of directors at specialty retail apparel chain Express.

Chawla, who will serve as a class-3 director and brings the number of directors on Express' board to seven, also will serve on the Express' compensation and governance committee. Chawla has lead Walgreens' e-commerce business since January 2011. Prior to her role at Walgreens, she served in roles at Dell and Wells Fargo.
