PHILADELPHIA — Lannett has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to market its version of an anti-obesity drug.

The FDA approved Lannett's abbreviated new drug application for diethylpropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets in the 75-mg strength. The company expects to begin shipping the product immediately.

Walgreens on Tuesday named Jeffrey Kang and Mike Ellis to its pharmacy, health and wellness division.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Tuesday named Jeffrey Kang and Mike Ellis to its pharmacy, health and wellness division.

Kang will join Walgreens Oct. 31 as SVP health and wellness services and solutions, reporting to both president and CEO Greg Wasson and president of pharmacy, health and wellness Kermit Crawford.

In addition, Mike Ellis has joined Walgreens as VP specialty pharmacy and infusion, reporting to Crawford.

Merck chairman Richard Clark is retiring, the company said Thursday.

WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. — Merck chairman Richard Clark is retiring, the company said Thursday.

Merck announced that Clark, who remained chairman of the company after stepping down as president and CEO in 2010, would retire from the company and its board of directors as of Dec. 1. Kenneth Frazier took over as president and CEO in January 2011, and the board has elected him to serve as chairman following Clark's departure.

The secretary also will tour the store with Walgreens president and CEO Greg Wasson, who will highlight the store's ability to offer accessible, preventive health services, such as flu vaccinations and diabetes care in underserved communities.

Jim Matheson, D-Utah, which would require a mandatory track-and-trace system — a move that could cost the typical pharmacy chain millions of dollars to implement across all stores.

TORONTO — Shoppers Drug Mart has named Domenic Pilla as its president and CEO, the company said.

Pilla, most recently president of McKesson Canada, will take the new position at the 1,190-store Canadian chain starting Nov. 1. Pilla has worked in retailing and health care for nearly 30 years, including experience in retail pharmacy, pharmaceutical distribution and sales management, specialty health networks, chronic disease management and adherence and health information technology.

All told, Express Scripts represents $5.3 billion in revenue to Walgreens, but the Chicago-based pharmacy is working toward retaining the prescription business from several employers and payers, "consistent with their contractual obligations," executives emphasized.
