This will be the last time I walk an NACDS Marketplace floor. Ever. I’m done. Because next year, it will be the Total Store Expo, and I’m already getting a little jazzed about that. But that’s a year away, yet. For now, let me share some snippets around some of the products and suppliers I found interesting making my last walkthroughs on the Marketplace show floor. Ever.

Here’s my thought process — is there an opportunity in sitting down with a retail pharmacy operation team along with an OTC buying team and exploring possible synergies between the two? Is there a value-add already built into this meeting?

CARSON, Calif. — The energy shot business in the mass market still is dominated by one player — Living Essentials’ 5-Hour Energy has almost 90% dollar share — but Sato Pharmaceutical, which boasts its Yunker Energy as the No. 1 energy shot in Japan, is looking to challenge that domination with the launch and support behind its Yunker Energy product across the United States. The overall category was up 9.3% to $194.5 million across food, drug and mass (excluding Walmart), according to SymphonyIRI Group data.

Once the season starts, nobody really remembers the number of stolen bases nabbed by Gregor Blanco (13) or the number of batters who could neither put a Francisco Liriano pitch into play nor tease out a walk (33). But ask the fans how many balls their favorite player knocked out of the park through spring training, chances are they'll be able to tell you. What Lilly Diabetes and Walgreens are doing is out-of-the-park stuff, where a Walgreens pharmacist dedicated to fielding questions across all disciplines will help augment a diabetes patient's experience with a deeper look into hypoglycemia.

JERUSALEM — Israel-based Teva Pharmaceutical Industries is switching stock exchanges, the company said.

The world's largest generic drug manufacturer — and increasingly a player in branded and specialty drugs — announced Wednesday that it would transfer the listing of its shares from the Nasdaq to the New York Stock Exchange, with plans to start trading on the NYSE on May 30 under its current ticker symbol, "TEVA."

LONDON — Unilever has agreed to acquire Russian beauty company Concern Kalina, which significantly will strengthen its foothold in skin care and hair care in Russia.

Unilever initially is acquiring 82% of Concern Kalina for approximately €390 million ($537 million). The acquisition, which is subject to regulatory approvals, is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. — Redbox remains the dominant player in kiosk DVD rentals with an average of 55 million rentals monthly in second quarter 2011. The company, which built its market dominance on $1 rentals, is testing price increases in some markets. Redbox and Foursquare are partnering to allow consumers to use their smartphones to check availability and reserve titles at their nearest kiosk.


Competitor NDR is experimenting with DVD sales as well as rentals from its kiosks, and may expand the concept.

NEW YORK — Financial services firm Credit Suisse tabulated total basket increases of 2.7% year over year and 1% month over month for retail.

“Our monthly pricing survey in Dallas and Chicago showed that all retailers raised prices on a year-over-year and month-over-month basis with the exception of Jewel [a Supervalu banner operating in Chicago],” Credit Suisse research analyst Ed Kelly wrote in a note published Monday.

BOSTON — Nelson marks the second branded player that should be making a significant commitment against iron supplementation in the coming year — the other being Meda Pharmaceuticals.

Nelson, however, is approaching the market with a "less is more" mantra. In other words, it's a lower dose iron solution with a higher aborption rate.

And because of the lower iron dose, it'll be a lot less likely to cause constipation and will be gentler on the stomach too.

CINCINNATI — Procter & Gamble's Head & Shoulders brand has welcomed Minnesota Twins All-Star catcher Joe Mauer as its newest brand ambassador.
