ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., on Thursday announced plans to introduce legislation that would strengthen federal regulations of compounding pharmacies. The legislation is borne out of the recent meningitis outbreak linked to the New England Compounding Center, which is located in Markey's district, that has drawn much criticism on how regulators oversee compounding pharmacies.

CAMP HILL, Pa. – Rite Aid is stocking extra emergency supplies and keeping its pharmacies open as Hurricane Sandy bears down on the East Coast, the retail pharmacy chain said.

The company said that stores in the potential path of the storm had increased supplies of bottled water, flashlights, batteries, canned food for people and pets, first aid supplies, disposable cameras, duct tape and cleaning supplies.

NEW YORK — The owner of an independent pharmacy in New York has won a national award for his diabetes education and counseling efforts.

Ronald Del Gaudio, a graduate of Long Island University's College of Pharmacy, also known as LIU Pharmacy, and the owner of Kings Pharmacy in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, has won the Health Mart Diabetes Care Excellence Award from the independent pharmacy franchise company, the university said. Kings Pharmacy, a member of Health Mart, includes two pharmacies in Brooklyn and one in Manhattan.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Community Pharmacists Association has a new crop of leaders for 2012-13, the group said Wednesday.

The new officers and board of directors, announced at the NCPA's 114th Annual Convention and Trade Exposition, are the group's governing body.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Ontario Health Minister Deb Matthews on Monday received her flu shot from a Rexall Pharma Plus pharmacist, kicking off the annual Ontario flu vaccination campaign.

WHAT IT MEANS AND WHY IT'S IMPORTANT — WellTransitions could be couched as another way in which Walgreens is striving to create solutions that lower the cost of overall health care outside of the physical retail pharmacy space, because it is. WellTransitions also could be characterized as a program that will routinely chip away at the $25 billion associated with hospital re-admissions by having more prescriptions filled at the pharmacy counter, because it does. But the real impact of this news? The real clincher?

SAN DIEGO — The National Community Pharmacists Association released its third online pharmacy benefit manager video at the Association’s Annual Convention. Titled “Fed Up With Phil,” the video is part of campaign to create greater awareness of how pharmacy benefit managers can undermine the relationship between patients and their pharmacists.

 SAN DIEGO — Pfizer on Monday was awarded the National Community Pharmacists Association 2012 Corporate Recognition Award at NCPA's 114th Annual Convention and Trade Exposition, the association announced Monday. 

 SAN DIEGO — A team of pharmacy students from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy was named the winner of the 2012 Good Neighbor Pharmacy National Community Pharmacists Association Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition, the National Community Pharmacists Association announced Monday. A team from the University of the Pacific Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy & Health Sciences was runner-up, and a team representing the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy finished as the second-runner up. 

Oh, Canada. In some ways, you’re showing your much bigger neighbor in the south the way forward in taking pharmacy to a higher level of practice. And if we’re smart, we’ll pay attention to the results. I’m talking about last week’s announcement by the provincial government of Ontario to expand the role of pharmacists so they can offer services that were previously the exclusive turf of the province’s 25,000 doctors.
