The Specialty Pharmacy Certification Board has certified nearly 50 pharmacists following the first round of exams, the group said Monday.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Specialty Pharmacy Certification Board has certified nearly 50 pharmacists following the first round of exams, the group said Monday.

The SPCB announced that 49 pharmacists had earned the Certified Specialty Pharmacist accreditation after taking the exams, which were administered in October, covering intake, fulfillment, clinical management and outcomes.

Nova Scotia's Truro Daily News reported that retired pharmacist Allan MacKinnon received the company's Bowl of Hygeia award during the weekend. Coworkers Kerry Mattatall and Marilyn MacLeod had put together the nomination package for MacKinnon, including 27 letters of support, citing the MacKinnons' support for their community.

NEW YORK — A proposal by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy to eliminate the required ratio of pharmacy technicians to pharmacists in retail pharmacies in the state has drawn mixed responses from professional and industry trade groups.

Currently, the required ratio is three technicians to one pharmacist, which the board's proposal would remove for retail pharmacies, known under Texas law as "Class A" pharmacies. In response, the Texas Pharmacy Association has proposed an interim ratio requirement of four technicians to one pharmacist.

A new study by IMS Health finds that most apps focused on health and wellness have limited functionality or evidence of value in advancing healthcare provision and outcomes, with fewer than half of them directly related to patient health and treatment, and more than half of them having fewer than 500 downloads.

With more than 43,000 health-and-wellness apps from the Apple App Store alone included in the IMS study, but a dearth of apps for elderly patients with chronic conditions, there is ample opportunity for developers to address this need. That will become especially important as health care becomes increasingly focused on patient outcomes. And this means opportunities for apps that address the ever-present issue of poor medication adherence.

WASHINGTON — Medication safety and pharmacy information systems get more attention in the latest version of an exam for pharmacy technicians.

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board announced Friday updates to the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam, based on the group's Job Analysis Study, which involves more than 25,000 pharmacy technicians from across the country and from different practice settings. The updated exam has nine knowledge groups known as domains, rather than three.

The acquisition of Catalina Health by Adheris makes Adheris the largest provider in the nation of tailored, direct-to-patient medication adherence programs, inVentiv said. Catalina Health president Renee Selman will lead the combined company. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Association of Specialty Pharmacy has launched a task force to investigate pharmacological management of medical marijuana, the group said.

Currently, according to NASP, there are no national standards of practice for the management of medical marijuana, though according to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, 21 states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana for medical purposes. Two of those states, Washington and Colorado, have legalized recreational use as well.
