SAN DIEGO Retail pharmacy is going through a “historic paradigm change” as pharmacists and pharmacy leaders expand their patient-care and clinical capabilities and provide new solutions to a “broken” healthcare system undergoing rapid change. 

PHOENIX The Apothecary Shops, a Phoenix-based chain of specialty pharmacies with 16 locations in six states, has acquired the Greater Sacramento Specialty Pharmacy.

GSP, which provides services to patients and practitioners in California, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, Idaho and Montana, will be a wholly owned subsidiary of The Apothecary Shops and will continue operating under the Greater Sacramento Specialty Pharmacy name. The acquisition of GSP bolsters the oncology specialty business for The Apothecary Shops. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

As the health-reform debate reached a crescendo last year, those arguments on behalf of pharmacy’s value found their way into congressional hearings and onto the pages of many newspapers.

WASHINGTON More than 120,000 pharmacists in 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia have received training to administer immunizations against influenza, prompting one pharmacy group to urge consumers to get themselves vaccinated.

The American Pharmacists Association is encouraging consumers to get influenza immunizations and consider their local pharmacies as places to receive vaccines.
