CHICAGO — Walgreens on Monday announced it will be a presenting sponsor of the Fifth Annual Latino Fashion Week from Nov. 1 to Nov. 6 here.

The event, which has become one of the nation's largest showcases for Latino designers and models, is expected to draw attendance of more than 10,000 fashion enthusiasts. The event will benefit Vive En Forma, a nonprofit organization dedicated to combating childhood obesity in Hispanic communities.

The Illinois Society for Advanced Practice Nursing has recognized Penny Strong, nurse practitioner at Walgreens' Take Care Clinic in River Forest, Ill., with its Marie Lindsey Spirit of Advanced Practice Nursing award during the Illinois Nurses Association biennial convention.

CHICAGO — The Illinois Society for Advanced Practice Nursing has recognized Penny Strong, nurse practitioner at Walgreens' Take Care Clinic in River Forest, Ill., with its Marie Lindsey Spirit of Advanced Practice Nursing award during the Illinois Nurses Association biennial convention.

The convention was held in East Peoria, Ill., from Oct. 20 to 22. The award is named after Marie Lindsey, PhD, APN, CNP, who was the first president of ISAPN and a driving force in the pursuit of legislation to recognize APNs in Illinois.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid is teaming up with OptumHealth to become the first to provide "virtual clinics" in a retail pharmacy setting.

Rite Aid announced Thursday the launch of NowClinic online care services at select Rite Aid stores in the Detroit area. NowClinic allows Rite Aid customers to interact in real time with doctors and OptumHealth nurses.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Caremark has partnered with Direct Relief USA to offer up to $6 million in free flu shots to community clinic and health center patients who are uninsured, the company announced on Tuesday.

More than 400 participating clinics and health centers across the country will identify uninsured individuals from their existing patient populations and provide them with a free flu shot voucher, which is redeemable at more than 7,200 CVS/pharmacy locations and the nearly 600 MinuteClinics inside select CVS/pharmacy stores.

"The axis of the healthcare system is shifting toward more accessible and collaborative models,” and both pharmacists and nurse practitioners are “well-positioned to have a substantial impact in a post-reform environment.” That was a key message that Walgreens chief medical officer Cheryl Pegus had for attendees of Forum 11, the annual meeting of the Care Continuum Alliance in San Francisco on Friday.

Many U.S. voters are in favor of expanding the use of nurse practitioners for routine medical care, and most believe that the quality of health care would improve if routine care was handled by nurse practitioners and doctors were able to focus more on challenging healthcare issues, according to the findings of a recent survey.

According to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of 1,000 adults, 67% of likely U.S. voters favored training and licensing nurse practitioners to expand the level of routine care they provide.
