Generic drug maker Hospira has acquired a manufacturing and research and development center from an Indian drug maker for $200 million, Hospira said Wednesday.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Generic drug maker Hospira has acquired a manufacturing and research and development center from an Indian drug maker for $200 million, Hospira said Wednesday.

Hospira said it bought the Food and Drug Administration-approved active pharmaceutical ingredient factory and R&D facility in Aurangabad, India, from Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals, saying it would reduce Hospira's costs, support its supplying of antibiotics and pave the way for future API development.

The Food and Drug Administration has determined that generic drug maker Caraco is in compliance with relevant paragraphs of the consent decree and may resume operations at its manufacturing facility and packaging sites in Detriot and Wixom, Mich., Caraco's parent company Sun Pharmaceutical Industries said.

During their inspection, the FDA reviewed the certification reports for heart failure treatment Carvedilol USP, as well as antibiotic Paramomycin USP, and determined Caraco may resume production of only these two drugs.

Generic drug maker Amneal Pharmaceuticals will spend $120 million to expand three of its plants, the company said Monday.

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — Generic drug maker Amneal Pharmaceuticals will spend $120 million to expand three of its plants, the company said Monday.

Amneal said it would spend the money over a two-year period lasting through 2014 to "significantly" grow operations at research-and-development, manufacturing and distribution plants in New York, New Jersey and Kentucky. The company, which employs more than 1,100 people in the United States, said the expansion would create 500 more jobs.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new Daiichi Sankyo manufacturing center that the company said would strengthen its domestic and global supply chain.

The Japan-based drug maker said it received FDA approval to package products at the plant, in Bethlehem, Pa. The company said it would be the first noncontracted U.S. manufacturing operation. The plant employs 39 people, and there are plans to hire more.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic treatment made by Perrigo for fungal infections of the vagina, the company said.

Perrigo announced the approval of butoconazole nitrate 2% vaginal cream, a generic version of KV Pharmaceutical's Gynazole-1, used to treat vulvovaginal candidiasis, an infection caused by Candida fungus. KV voluntarily discontinued selling the drug in January 2009 due to manufacturing problems.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the bills, sponsored by Republican Rep. Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania, would create an expedited FDA approval pathway for follow-on versions of biogenetic medications such as vaccines and drugs made from human tissue and plasma.
