DUBLIN — Covidien will acquire a company that markets a swallowed capsule used in medical imaging for $860 million, the hospital equipment manufacturer said Sunday.

Covidien announced a deal to acquire all outstanding shares of Given Imaging for $30 a share. Given Imaging specializes in products for visualizing, diagnosing and monitoring the digestive system, including its flagship product, PillCam.

The report, "The Wellness Impact: Enhancing Academic Success Through Healthy School Environments", was the work of the GENYOUth Foundation, National Dairy Council, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American School Health Association.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Kodak is selling its digital imaging patents for $525 million, the bankrupt photography company said.

The sale of the more than 1,100 patents, part of the company's restructuring efforts as it seeks to emerge from chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring, involves the sale of the patents to a group of companies organized by Intellectual Ventures and RPX. According to published reports, companies buying the patents include Apple, Research In Motion and Google. Others include Adobe, Samsung, Fujifilm and China-based Huawei Technologies.

Kodak said the complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York and was related to U.S. Patent Nos. 5,493,335; 6,292,218; 6,573,927; 6,441,854; and 5,164,831.

As part of the changes, Kodak has consolidated three units into two, which now are called the commercial segment and the consumer segment.

BALTIMORE — A University of Maryland pharmacy professor won top honors last week for his work developing a means of measuring oxygen levels in the brain, the university said Monday.

The state chapter of the American Chemical Society named Gerald Rosen its Maryland Chemist of the Year. Rosen and colleagues are developing real-time electron paramagnetic resonance imaging, or EPRI, to measure critical oxygen levels in stroke and tumor patients and to improve drug development.
