A federal judge in Washington has dismissed a suit against the FDA brought up by Mylan for withholding approval for the company to sell a generic version of Novartis AG’s heart pill, Diovan.

WASHINGTON — A federal judge in Washington has dismissed a suit against the FDA brought up by Mylan for withholding approval for the company to sell a generic version of Novartis AG’s heart pill, Diovan.

U.S. District Court Judge John D. Bates said in an opinion filed on Dec. 27, that the FDA did not act “capriciously” when it denied Mylan exclusivity to market its version of Diovan. Bates also said Mylan did not show it suffered “irreparable harm” as a result.

PITTSBURGH — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic hypertension drug made by Mylan, the company said.

Mylan announced the approval and launch of candesartan cilexetil and hydrochlorothiazide tablets in the 16/12.5-mg, 32/12.5-mg and 32/25-mg strengths. Mylan said it was the first company to submit a complete regulatory approval application for the drug and is thus entitled to 180 days of market exclusivity in which to compete directly with the branded version.

Par announced that it had entered a supply and distribution agreement through subsidiary Par Pharmaceutical to distribute an authorized generic version of Atacand HCT (i.e., candesartan cilexetil and hydrochlorothiazide) tablets.

An authorized generic is a branded drug marketed under its generic name at a discounted price, usually through a third-party company.

PITTSBURGH — Generic drug maker Mylan has received regulatory approval for a drug used to treat high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, the company said Friday, saying that it would launch both drugs immediately.

Mylan said the Food and Drug Administration approved its irbesartan tablets in the 75 mg, 150 mg and 300 mg strengths and irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide tablets in the 150 mg/12.5 mg and 300 mg/12.5 mg strengths. The drugs are respectively generic versions of Sanofi's Avapro and Avalide.

NEW YORK — Generic drug maker Sandoz has launched an authorized generic version of a drug used to treat hypertension.

The generics division of Swiss drug maker Novartis announced the introduction of valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide tablets, a generic version of Novartis' Diovan HCT. Novartis will continue marketing the branded version of the drug, which had sales of $2.3 billion in 2011 together with Diovan (valsartan).

The drug maker announced Friday the approval of valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide tablets in the 80-mg/12.5-mg, 160-mg/12.5-mg, 160-mg/25-mg, 320-mg/12.5-mg and 320-mg/25-mg strengths.

The drug, a generic version of Novartis' Diovan HCT, is used to treat high blood pressure, or hypertension, in patients who can't control their blood pressure with one drug or who are starting therapy and need multiple drugs.

JERUSALEM — Teva Pharmaceutical Industries has launched generic versions of two blood pressure drugs made by Sanofi, Teva said Monday.

Teva announced the launch of irbesartan and irbesartan/hydrochlorothiazide tablets, respectively generic versions of Avapro and Avalide. Avapro has annual sales of $464 million, and Avalide has annual sales of $124 million, according to IMS Health. Both drugs are used to treat high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

All strengths of generic lisinopril are free, Publix said, noting, however, that lisinopril-hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) combination products are excluded from the offer. Lisinopril is designed to prevent, treat or improve symptoms of such conditions as hypertension, certain heart conditions, diabetes and certain chronic kidney conditions.

The “TRINITY” study of Tribenzor (olmesartan medoxomil, amlodipine besylate and hydrochlorothiazide) showed the drug was well-tolerated and effective in patients ranging in age from younger than 65 years to older than 65 years, after a year.

Novartis Diovan HCT (valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide) won the HCPC’s Compliance Package of the Year award at the council’s RxAdherence 19th annual symposium for its Shellpak packaging design, made by product packaging manufacturer MeadWestvaco Corp. Anderson Packaging, part of AmerisourceBergen Packaging Group, handles the drug’s fulfillment.

EAST HANOVER, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved Novartis Pharmaceuticals’ Amturnide (aliskiren, amlodipine and hydrochlorothiazide) tablets for the treatment of high blood pressure, according to the pharma company. 

Amturnide combines the only approved direct rennin inhibitor worldwide, Tekturna (aliskiren), with the widely used calcium channel blocker amlodipine and the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ).
