A chronic disorder, psoriatic arthritis is characterized by pain, stiffness, swelling and tenderness of the joints, inflammation of specific ligaments and tendons, and a decrease in physical functioning. Otezla is the only FDA-approved oral treatment for psoriatic arthritis.

The head of the country's largest e-prescribing network is stepping down, the company said Thursday.

ARLINGTON, Va. — The head of the country's largest e-prescribing network is stepping down, the company said Thursday.

Surescripts announced that president and CEO Harry Totonis would leave the company in March. Totonis began with the company following its 2008 merger with RxHub.

Surescripts' board of directors is retaining an executive search firm to find a successor, and a spokeswoman for the company told DSN that it was actively looking for a replacement with Totonis' help, and did not have plans to appoint an interim CEO at this time.

NEW YORK — More Americans now say they are loosening the purse strings in advance of the holiday season, and fewer say they are tightening their belts, according to a recent Citi national survey released Monday. Only 35% said they would be spending less than last year, reflecting the lowest level of holiday budget cutbacks since the financial crisis. As many as 63% of Americans plan to spend more (11%) or the same (52%) on holiday shopping this year.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid has appointed healthcare executive Myrtle Potter to its board of directors, the retail pharmacy chain said Tuesday.

Potter is currently CEO of Myrtle Potter & Co., a Silicon Valley-based consulting firm focused on life sciences and health care, as well as the head of consumer healthcare content company Myrtle Potter Media. She previous served as president of commercial operations and COO at Genentech and has worked at companies like Bristol-Myers Squibb and Merck.

OSAKA, Japan — Takeda Pharmaceutical Co., the largest drug maker in Japan, has hired the head of GlaxoSmithKline's vaccines division as its COO, Takeda said.

Christophe Weber was elected at the drug maker's board of directors meeting to become COO and candidate as the next CEO. Current president and CEO Yasuchika Hasegawa is expected to be named chairman and CEO.

Weber is currently president and general manager of GSK Vaccines, CEO of GSK Biologicals in Belgium and a member of GSK's global corporate executive team.

The Lund Report, an online publication that covers Oregon's healthcare system, reported that Gary Schnabel was stepping down to pursue "other interests." Schnabel turned 65 years old this month and has lead the board for 19 years.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — Perrigo Co. has hired a former Food and Drug Administration official for its regulatory department, the drug maker said Friday.

The Allegan, Mich.-based drug maker announced the appointment of Keith Webber as head of regulatory review, a position in which he will start on Oct. 21. Webber previously served as acting director of the FDA's Office of Pharmaceutical Science, part of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, which regulates prescription and OTC drugs. He also served as director of the Office of Generic Drugs.

NEW YORK — Beauty company Revlon announced on Wednesday that net sales were essentially flat during the second quarter due, in part, to continued softness in its Almay brand.

During its conference call with analysts Wednesday morning, the company also announced that Bob Kretzman, chief administrative officer, will retire at the end of September, following a 25-year career at Revlon. Kretzman will join Revlon's board of directors, effective Oct. 1.

CARLISLE, Pa. — Royal Ahold's U.S. division has appointed Juan De Paoli to head the division's brand management and private-label development, the company said.

Ahold USA announced that it had hired De Paoli as SVP brand management and own brands, effective Monday. Ahold USA runs the Stop & Shop, Giant Food of Landover, Md., and Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa., chains, as well as the Peapod online grocery service.

Sandoz, the generics arm of Swiss drug maker Novartis, said it had started a phase-3 trial of biosimilar etanercept, a knock-off version of Amgen's Enbrel, used to treat chronic plaque-type psoriasis.

The head of generic drug maker Impax Labs will retire, the company said Tuesday.

HAYWARD, Calif. — The head of generic drug maker Impax Labs will retire, the company said Tuesday.

Impax said president and CEO Larry Hsu would retire, but would remain with the company until a replacement CEO is found and he would remain as a board member following the appointment of his successor. Hsu cofounded the company in 1994.

A three-person search committee to find a new CEO will include Hsu, Allen Chao and board chairman Bob Burr.

Pharmacy's value as part of an outcomes-based healthcare alignment was the highlight of the closing business presentation at the National Association of Chain Drug Stores' 2013 Annual Conference. And now it's up to NACDS members to expose Congress leaders to that value quotient on a regular basis.

That was the message shared by incoming NACDS chairman Bob Narveson. It goes to show that even as the gavel passes from the head of one of the industry's largest pharmacy chains to one of the smaller chains, innovation in patient care is happening at all levels.
