Inc. magazine named Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy as one of the country's top 100 job creators as part of the business magazine's inaugural Hire Power Awards. Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy cracked the list at No. 94 with the addition of 233 new positions over the past three years and came in at No. 5 in the company's home state of Michigan.

But though the company comes in at No. 94 on 'Inc.''s list, measured up against the likes of IT Services juggernaut GoDaddy.com or the rapidly growing fast-food chain Colorado Smashburger, Diplomat Specialty is a bellwether all the same — specialty pharmacy is and will be the catalyst for growth in the retail pharmacy industry.

Long-time Fred Meyer executive Lynn Gust was named president of the 133-store Kroger division.

CINCINNATI — Long-time Fred Meyer executive Lynn Gust was named president of the 133-store Kroger division.

Gust, 59, joined Koriger in 1970 as a parcel clerk and most recently served as the company’s SVP of operations. Gust was appointed to that position in 2011 and prior to that he served as EVP of corporate merchandising and advertising. During his career Gust also served as VP of the Fred Meyer food group and SVP of store operations.

Harris Teeter on Monday announced that more than $550,000 has been donated to local food banks out of the company’s Harvest Feast Food Drive and Donation Card Campaign.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Harris Teeter on Monday announced that more than $550,000 has been donated to local food banks out of the company’s Harvest Feast Food Drive and Donation Card Campaign.  

The campaign ran during the month of November in all Harris Teeter stores; customers purchased $1, $5 or $20 donation cards, and the dollars donated during the campaign equate to 4.4 million meals which the food banks involved are able to provide to community members-in-need.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Kerr Drug is launching a holiday toy and food drive for families in need, the regional chain said.

Kerr said it was responding to the difficult economy by collecting toys and food items at all its stores around North Carolina.

Collection bins were set up at the front of stores starting on Nov. 20 and will be there until Dec. 21. The Kerr Cares for Kids Foundation will give donated items to charity groups in the state that will then distribute them to needy families.

Even though many baby care products are manufactured "BPA-free," researchers from the University of Michigan School of Public Health found that bisphenol A, a chemical used in many consumer products, including plastic bottles and metal food and beverage cans, is common in fetal liver tissue, demonstrating that there is considerable exposure to the chemical during pregnancy.

CHICAGO — Rice-A-Roni has introduced single-serve, microwavable, flavored rice cups for people in search of a quick meal.

The instant food brand announced Wednesday the introduction of the new cups, which include long-grain rice, toasted vermicelli and others, and require only water and microwaving for three-an-a-half minutes.

Alexia, which already makes other bread products like Ciabatta Rolls, Ancient Grain Rolls, Classic French Rolls and Focaccia Rolls, said the new Sweet Potato Rolls can be prepared in less than 20 minutes.

Kroger remained one of the few outperforming supermarket operators Thursday morning as the grocer exceeded analyst consensus adjusted earnings per diluted share by 3 cents with 46 cents per share.

CINCINNATI — Kroger remained one of the few outperforming supermarket operators Thursday morning as the grocer exceeded analyst consensus adjusted earnings per diluted share by 3 cents with 46 cents per share. Actual reported net earnings were even higher — 60 cents per share — as Kroger benefitted from a settlement with Visa and MasterCard and from a reduction in the company's obligation to fund the UFCW consolidated pension fund created in January. 

Kroger shares were up 3.4% to $25.90 in late morning trading.

LANDOVER, Md. — Giant-Landover donated 1,000 turkeys to a nearby food bank last week to help families in need enjoy Thanksgiving, the Ahold-owned chain said.

The chain, officially known as Giant Food and based in Landover, Md., sent President Anthony Hucker and VP Finance Brian Shelton to the Capital Area Food Bank to present 1,000 turkeys on Friday. Shelton is also a board member of the food bank.

ATLANTA — A majority of retailers say delivering a consistent customer experience is their top priority this holiday season, according to a new survey.

Supply chain and retail technology provider RedPrairie released results of its "Holiday Hiring Snapshot" survey of 250 big-box, specialty, grocery, convenience store and food service retailers based in the United States, finding that nearly 60% cited the importance of consistency, with 29% saying they would hire more seasonal workers this year than last year.
