The Grocery Manufacturers Association has named George Dunaif as its new VP food safety and technical services.

WASHINGTON — The Grocery Manufacturers Association has named George Dunaif as its new VP food safety and technical services.

Dunaif most recently served as VP global food safety at Campbell Soup. In that role, he was responsible for the company’s worldwide food safety function, including toxicology, microbiology, process safety and analytical chemistry. He also served as vice-chairman of the Campbell corporate crisis management team.

The Food and Drug Administration is looking for comments from consumers, the food industry and others about proposed labeling for gluten-free foods.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration is looking for comments from consumers, the food industry and others about proposed labeling for gluten-free foods.

Originally proposed in 2007, the proposals include a requirement that foods labeled as "gluten-free" can't contain 20 parts per million or more gluten, a protein that occurs in wheat, rye and barley. The proposal was based on technologies used to detect gluten in food, which can't detect it reliably if the level is less than 20 ppm.

New Dreyer's Slow Churned light ice cream now is available in snack-size cups, serving ice cream lovers half the fat and one-third less calories, the brand said. Additionally, the snack-size cups also will be available for its frozen yogurt blends line, which contains live and active cultures that may aid a healthy digestive system, Dreyer's added.

NEW YORK — Financial services firm Credit Suisse tabulated total basket increases of 2.7% year over year and 1% month over month for retail.

“Our monthly pricing survey in Dallas and Chicago showed that all retailers raised prices on a year-over-year and month-over-month basis with the exception of Jewel [a Supervalu banner operating in Chicago],” Credit Suisse research analyst Ed Kelly wrote in a note published Monday.

During that period, women’s hair coloring rose close to 6% to $943.7 million, while men’s hair coloring rose 1.4% to $140.7 million.

New frosted devil's food cake Donettes are mini donuts that are dipped in a chocolate-flavored coating and now are available at stores nationwide.

United Natural Foods said it will assume distribution to all of Safeway's banners, effective this October. The company said it is expecting a brief transition period from Safeway's current distributors.

It seems that when given the opportunity, more consumers choose organic food over conventionally produced food, according to the latest poll conducted by Thomson Reuters and NPR.

WASHINGTON — It seems that when given the opportunity, more consumers choose organic food over conventionally produced food, according to the latest poll conducted by Thomson Reuters and NPR.

The Thomson Reuters-NPR Health Poll found that among 3,014 participants interviewed from May 2 to 13, 58% preferred organic food. Additionally, more than two-thirds of consumers ages 35 years and younger, as well as those with a bachelor's degree or higher, preferred organic food (63% and 64%, respectively).
