A growing number of cities — including Seattle, where Glen Hiemstra lives — are ditching the 1950s highways-and-suburbs school of development and embracing dense city centers and walkable communities. One of the biggest things people want to walk to is a place to get food, Hiemstra told DSN. Drug stores' approach to food has often been similar to that of convenience stores, but changing living patterns mean that fresh foods and prepared foods could become more common, making the drug store a destination for everything from fruit salad to sushi. In addition, 3D printing could grow in importance as drug stores use it to create small products and components, as well as on-demand items for customers, saving storeroom space in the process.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — In an effort to increase donations to its food pantry partners, Meijer announced Tuesday that it has rebranded its signature hunger relief program, Simply Give, with the color orange to align more closely to the issue that continues to rise throughout the Midwest.

To celebrate the enhancement of its program, the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer will stretch every customer's $10 Simply Give donation further April 11 to 12. That means for every $10 donation card purchase, Meijer will contribute $20, resulting in a total $30 donation.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a move to increase traffic and grow sales, Family Dollar said it added 400 products to its food offerings and reduced prices on 1,000 other items.

As part of the rollout, the operator of more than 8,100 stores enlisted the aid of television personality, author and chef Pat Neely. Plans call for Neely to participate in several special events including a recipe contest in which the challenge is to prepare a meal for four for under $15. The contest winner will receive a cooking experience with Neely at his home in Memphis.

Following speculation that Safeway may be considering "strategic alternatives," Safeway executives during their latest conference call confirmed just that — the supermarket retailer placed itself on the sales block. Before that conference call, analysts were already putting two and two together and coming up with two viable suitors for the Safeway footprint — private investment firm Cerberus, also known as New Albertsons, and supermarket giant Kroger, which has just closed on Harris Teeter for $2.5 billion.

Cerberus is said to be the lead bidder, but Kroger shouldn't be ruled out. But what would Cerberus or Kroger be getting if they purchased Safeway outright for almost $10 billion? In addition to 1,335 locations and a $2.7 billion book of prescription business, there would be some intangibles in the deal as well — namely Safeway's relatively advanced Just for U loyalty program and a yet-to-be launched health-and-wellness platform that's supposed to evolve Safeway over the next decade from being a food retailer into being a health solutions center.
