CHICAGO — The Network of Executive Women is honoring Mike Duke, president and CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, with its William J. Grize Diversity Hall of Fame Award, on June 28 during Women's Day at the LPGA in Rogers, Ark. The award, named after the late CEO of Ahold USA, who was an early advocate of industry diversity, is bestowed upon industry leaders who have demonstrated "an enduring commitment to the advancement of women and to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace," NEW announced.

The National Retail Federation has named Bill Thorne SVP communications and public affairs.

WASHINGTON — The National Retail Federation has named Bill Thorne SVP communications and public affairs. He will join NRF on June 1 to oversee the organization's industry and public affairs communications strategy, including NRF's "Retail Means Jobs" campaign, a multimillion dollar initiative to demonstrate the power of retail to America’s economy and the career opportunities within the industry.

Thorne currently serves as senior director of community affairs at Walmart.

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores has elected new officers for the coming year.

PALM BEACH, Fla. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores has elected new officers for the coming year.

For the 2012-2013 term, NACDS chairman Bob Loeffler, who also serves as chief administrative officer of H-E-B, will be succeeded by Walgreens president and CEO Greg Wasson. Thrifty White Pharmacy president and CEO Bob Narveson was elected as vice chairman, while Rite Aid president and CEO John Standley was appointed as treasurer, as well as a member of NACDS' executive committee. Wasson, Narveson and Standley will serve one-year terms.

Two weeks after Avon rejected Coty’s bid to snap up the company in a deal valued at $10 billion, Coty is reaffirming its interest in Avon and is urging Avon shareholders to push for the offer.

NEW YORK — Two weeks after Avon rejected Coty’s bid to snap up the company in a deal valued at $10 billion, Coty is reaffirming its interest in Avon and is urging Avon shareholders to push for the offer.

As previously reported, Coty submitted a nonbinding proposal to acquire Avon for $23.25 per share in cash. The proposal, valued at approximately $10 billion, represents a substantial premium of 27% over the three-month, volume-weighted average price for Avon shares, Coty stated.

The marketing and sales management company said that Diane Manwaring will serve as president of the Emerson Consulting Group, which will offer such services as strategic planning, due diligence, category assessments and feasibility studies to clients.

Sun Products has announced the appointment of a new EVP national brands.

WILTON, Conn. — Sun Products has announced the appointment of a new EVP national brands.

Ed Vlacich, the company said, will be responsible for building Sun Products' branded business through effective marketing, innovation and strategic leadership and will be a member of the company's executive leadership team.

Vlacich comes to Sun Products from Novartis, where he spent more than seven years in senior leadership roles. He most recently served as global chief marketing officer for CIBA Vision, a $2 billion contact lens and care business.

FLINT, Mich. — Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy has appointed a longtime specialty pharmacy executive to its executive team, the company said Thursday.

Diplomat announced that it had made Gary Rice its VP clinical services. Rice had previously worked as Diplomat's director of clinical services.

Avon, which recently rejected a bid from Coty, has ended its previously announced search for a new CEO by hiring former Johnson & Johnson executive Sheri McCoy to take the helm.

NEW YORK — Avon, which recently rejected a bid from Coty, has ended its previously announced search for a new CEO by hiring former Johnson & Johnson executive Sheri McCoy to take the helm.

McCoy will assume her role as Avon CEO as of April 23. The appointment brings to a close a four-month search to replace CEO Andrea Jung. Jung will continue as chairman of the board.

Meijer SVP human resources Karen Morris was named among the 25 influential African-American women in business in 2012 by The Network Journal. The magazine started recognizing influential African-American women in 1999.

LONDON — Alliance Boots has continued to expand its presence in the global marketplace by opening its 200th store in Thailand.

The international pharmacy-led health and beauty group said the store — which was inaugurated by executive chairman Stefano Pessina, pharmaceutical wholesale division CEO Ornella Barra and health and beauty division CEO Alex Gourlay on Tuesday — is located in central Bangkok. Alliance Boots opened its first Boots store in Thailand in 1997, the company said.

The Defense Department has instructed AAFES to convert the Commanding General’s position to a nonmilitary director/CEO position, marking the first time in the AAFES’s 116-year history that a civilian will lead the organization. COO Mike Howard will take over as acting director/CEO as the organization’s board seeks a permanent replacement.

The current president of the company's international division, Bob Black, is leaving the company to pursue other opportunities. A former Safeway executive has joined Dollar General as its EVP store operations.

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — A former Safeway executive has joined Dollar General as its EVP store operations.

Effective March 19, Greg Sparks will assume all responsibilities for the operations of more than 9,900 retail stores in 38 states and serve on Dollar General's real estate and store development committee, the company said. Sparks will report to chairman and CEO Rick Dreiling.

Sparks most recently served as president of Safeway's Seattle division. His departure from the supermarket retailer was announced earlier this week.
