RESTON, Va. — The November-December 2011 holiday season marked a new record in retail e-commerce spending, ComScore reported.

The season realized an overall gain of 15% versus last year, totaling $37.2 billion. This record was achieved with help from ten individual shopping days that surpassed $1 billion in spending, led by Cyber Monday — which ranked No. 1 for the second consecutive year — at $1.25 billion.

Following recent e-commerce trends released by ComScore, online spending continues to grow at a consistent 15% rate. As reported earlier, holiday e-commerce spending rose 15% year-over-year to $26.8 billion for the first 42 days of the shopping season, through Dec. 12.

And on Sunday, ComScore released its latest findings, that online sales surpassed $1 billion on four days during the work week of Dec.12 to 16, a 15% increase over the same period last year.

The National Retail Federation said an estimated 226 million shoppers visited stores and websites over Thanksgiving weekend, compared with 212 million last year, and spent an average of $398 per person, compared with $365 last year. Those findings are based on an NRF survey of 3,826 shoppers conducted over the weekend by BIGresearch.

Online retail spending reached $36.3 billion for third quarter 2011, up 13% from last year, according to comScore.

RESTON, Va. — Online retail spending reached $36.3 billion for third quarter 2011, up 13% from last year, according to comScore. This growth rate represented the eighth consecutive quarter of positive year-over-year growth and fourth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth rates.

The top-performing online product categories were: digital content and subscriptions, event tickets, jewelry and watches, consumer electronics (excluding computer peripherals) and computer software. Each category grew at least 15% versus a year ago, comScore reported.
