According to Merz, Mederma Stretch Marks Therapy has one retail facing, is usually on the bottom shelf and is housed among a disparate array of skin care products, all with heavy blocking. It also has a $40 price tag, which is higher than most drug store products, and which also earns it security devices like Lucite keepers and spiders in some stores.

Study finds specialty drug costs increase 15% annually

Specialty drugs are expected to account for 50% of all drug costs by 2018, according to two new studies.

SAN DIEGO — Specialty drugs are expected to account for 50% of all drug costs by 2018, according to two new studies.

By contrast, specialty drugs accounted for 20% of all drug costs in 2009, but increased to 28.7% by 2012. Pharmacy benefit manager Prime Therapeutics and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota conducted the studies, and Prime is presenting them Tuesday at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy's 25th annual meeting and expo in San Diego.

A Colorado-based firm will install solar power systems at 22 Walgreens stores in 14 cities in the state over the next few months, under a partnership between the two companies.

AURORA, Colo. — A Colorado-based firm will install solar power systems at 22 Walgreens stores in 14 cities in the state over the next few months, under a partnership between the two companies.

Walgreens announced Monday an expansion of its relationship with SolarCity, saying the new power systems would reduce more than 47.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions over the next two decades.

The Food and Drug Administration has picked Kathleen Uhl to serve as acting director of the Office of Generic Drugs, the agency said.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has picked Kathleen Uhl to serve as acting director of the Office of Generic Drugs, the agency said Tuesday.

In a memo sent out to staff of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, the section of the agency that oversees the OGD, CDER director Janet Woodcock wrote that Uhl most recently served as senior adviser to director Greg Geba, who announced his resignation Thursday.

Obama announced his intent to appointment Burwell several months ago, but the nomination on Monday makes it official and paves the way for Senate confirmation hearings to begin.
