Bi-Lo Holdings launched the Paws 'Feed the Love' Community Donation Program to benefit area food banks and nonprofit partners dedicated to eliminating hunger for pets in their local communities.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Bi-Lo Holdings on Wednesday launched the Paws “Feed the Love” Community Donation Program to benefit area food banks and nonprofit partners dedicated to eliminating hunger for pets in their local communities. Since 2010, the campaign has provided more than 85 tons of pet food for owners in need throughout Bi-Lo’s operating area. Due to its success, Bi-Lo Holdings is expanding the program this year to include all Winn-Dixie stores throughout the Southeast.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The philanthropic arm of supermarket operator Bi-Lo Holdings is donating more than $3 million to charities in the South, the company said.

The Bi-Lo Holdings Foundation said it would donate about $3.2 million to 281 non-profit organizations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, particularly organizations focused on hunger, education, health, women and children. Bi-Lo Holdings operates the Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie supermarket banners.

The Tampa Bay, Fla., Times reported Bi-Lo planned to retire the Sweetbay name next year. Kash n' Karry changed its name to Sweetbay in 2004.

The shares are expected to be offered by Southeastern Grocers, and the number of shares to be offered and the price range for the offering have not yet been determined.

LAKELAND and JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Publix Super Markets and Bi-Lo Holdings LLC, parent company of the Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie grocery store chains, on Friday announced they have entered into an agreement under which Publix is expected to purchase seven Bi-Lo-branded stores in North and South Carolina. The transaction is projected to close in October 2013 and includes seven leased stores as well as major equipment. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The parent company of the Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie supermarket chains will buy three chains from Belgium-based Delhaize Group.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The parent company of the Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie supermarket chains will buy three chains from Belgium-based Delhaize Group.

Bi-Lo Holdings said it would acquire the Sweetbay, Harveys and Reid's chains from Delhaize for $265 million. The deal includes 72 Sweetbay stores, leases for 10 prior Sweetbay locations, 72 Harveys stores and 11 Reid's stores, for a total of 165 stores and 10,000 employees throughout the Southeast. Bi-Lo Holdings already operates 686 stores, 482 of which have pharmacies, throughout the southeast.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Anthea Jones has assumed the role of president at Bi-Lo. He will continue to serve as SVP operations. 

Jones comes to the position from the Bi-Lo side of the recent merger between regional supermarkets Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie. He signed on with Bi-Lo in 1999 after 17 years at Food Lion. He also is the immediate past board chairman for the Global Market Development Center. 

Jones succeeds Michael Byars in the position. Randall Onstead continues as president and CEO of the combined company, Bi-Lo Holdings.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Winn-Dixie Stores on Wednesday announced the donation of a 50-ft. refrigerated semi-trailer to Second Harvest North Florida, the regional food bank that supplies food to 450 local nonprofit organizations across 17 counties in northern Florida.

Winn-Dixie donated the trailer after learning the food bank's existing trailer was no longer road-worthy and is being used as an auxiliary refrigeration unit to store perishable foods. The trailer was loaded with approximately 13,000 lbs. of food to restock the food bank's nearly empty warehouse.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Winn-Dixie Stores on Monday kicked off its “Shield Yourself” flu vaccination campaign offering consumers three options in getting this year’s influenza vaccine.

Guests at any of the grocer’s in-store pharmacies can choose from the standard vaccination, a high-dose vaccine recommended for those 65 years and older or an Intradermal flu vaccination administered with a microneedle that is 90% smaller than traditional needles, Winn-Dixie stated.
