CVS Caremark made big news — BIG news — when it announced on Feb. 5 that it would pull tobacco products from all of its pharmacy locations.

This is an extremely important step for the company as it sends the strong message that it is truly dedicated to helping people on their path to better health. Stripping away the roughly $2 billion in revenues garnered from the tobacco shopper likely wasn’t an easy decision but it makes sense — a lot of sense — for CVS. It clearly demonstrates to its shoppers, health systems and PBM clients that it is placing patients’ health front and center.

CVS Caremark’s board of directors has elected former White House adviser Nancy-Ann DeParle to serve on its board, the company stated in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

DeParle will be an independent director and will serve on the board’s audit committee, according to the filing.

Timed with the recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy announced the release of an Opioid Overdose Toolkit. This resource is designed to help raise awareness of overdose prevention, treatment and recovery for first responders, prescribers and patients.

A White House trade policy leader has been appointed as U.S. Trade Representative.

WASHINGTON — A White House trade policy leader has been appointed as U.S. trade representative.

The Senate voted last week to approve Michael Froman to the position. Froman was previously an adviser to President Barack Obama on international economic affairs and replaces acting U.S. Trade Representative Miriam Sapiro.

One sometimes wonders. As much as I like the president and many of his ideas and instincts, I’m sometimes stumped by some of the lesser-understood facets of the administration’s health policy, and by the seemingly contradictory sets of priorities promoted by that policy.

NEW YORK — Automatic spending cuts stemming from the failure of Congress and the White House to reach a budget deal will likely harm the disease-preventing capabilities of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to a new report.

GlobalData, a market research and analytics firm, said the slashing of the CDC's funding by $450 million, or 8%, due to the sequester would both hamper its ability to prevent infectious diseases through immunization, surveillance and response programs while also failing to accomplish the goal of decreasing federal spending.
