After a popular Facebook contest made Brandi, a 7-year-old German shepherd mix, Weis Markets’ Pet of the Game at a Penn State football game in 2010, the company’s second annual Pet of the Game Facebook Contest returns to Weis Markets’ official Facebook fan page, the grocer announced Thursday.

Weis recognized for firing up recycling

The Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania recently recognized Weis Markets for its commitment to recycling and its innovative program to recycle waxed cardboard used to ship and store fresh vegetables and meats, the grocer announced Monday.

SUNBURY, Pa. — The Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania recently recognized Weis Markets for its commitment to recycling and its innovative program to recycle waxed cardboard used to ship and store fresh vegetables and meats, the grocer announced Monday.

In 2010, Weis Markets teamed up with Envirolog to recycle its waxed cardboard and produce Envirolog fireplace logs, which are sold in Weis Markets stores.  Typically, supermarkets send most of their waxed cardboard to landfills since it is difficult to recycle.

Q2 sales gain momentum at Weis

Weis Markets on Monday reported its second-quarter sales increased 3.5% to $676.7 million, while its comparable-store sales for the period increased 5.1%.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Monday reported its second-quarter sales increased 3.5% to $676.7 million, while its comparable-store sales for the period increased 5.1%.

For the 13-week period ended June 25, the company's net income increased 0.9% to $20.7 million, compared with $20.5 million in 2010, while earnings per share increased to 77 cents, compared with 76 cents in 2010.

Weis declares quarterly dividend

Weis Markets announced that its board of directors declared a quarterly dividend of 29 cents per share.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets announced that its board of directors declared a quarterly dividend of 29 cents per share.

The company said the dividend is payable to shareholders of record as of July 18 and payable on Aug. 1.

Weis operates 162 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, New Jersey and West Virginia.

Weis Markets on Thursday announced an increase of its 2011 capital expenditure budget by 7% to $110 million. The current budget includes 14 major remodels, two additions and three new/replacement stores.

Basic and diluted earnings per share increased 6.2% to 69 cents per share, Weis reported.

Same-store sales were up 0.6%.

Bainbridge & Knight said its Lichi superfruit diet supplement, which is derived from 100% pure lychee berries and contains 17 active natural ingredients, will be available at Weis this month. The supermarket retailer operates stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, New Jersey and West Virginia.

Weis posts 2010 sales gain

Weis Markets on Thursday reported an 8.7% increase, to $68.3 million, in its fiscal-year 2010 net income for the 52-week period ended Dec. 25, and said its earnings per share for the year increased 21 cents, to $2.54 per share, compared with the same period a year ago.
