 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Inmar on Wednesday announced Weis Markets has expanded its membership in the Inmar Promotion Network with the activation of a new digital coupon program, which adds paperless coupons to Weis' marketing portfolio.

According to Inmar, redemption of paperless coupons has doubled in volume every year since 2008. In 2012, Inmar processed more than 20 million paperless coupons.

Weis Markets on Monday posted first-quarter sales of $682.7 million, representing an increase of 3.2%. Same-store sales were up 0.8%.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Monday posted first-quarter sales of $682.7 million, representing an increase of 3.2%. Same-store sales were up 0.8%.  

"We continue to make forward progress in a market impacted by a poor economy that is generating minimal job growth. These have been ongoing trends in most of the markets we serve," said David Hepfinger, Weis Markets' president and CEO.  "Our customers also were impacted in the first quarter by a tax increase and post-holiday debt," he said.

Weis Markets on Sunday celebrated the completion of its Hamburg location remodel and upgrade.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Sunday celebrated the completion of its Hamburg location remodel and upgrade.

The store’s pharmacy, which was once a separate location, has been integrated into the store. In addition, the store’s HBC section has been relocated and is now adjacent to the pharmacy.

The store now features all new décor, a new exterior and expanded food service options, including in-store pizza and an upgraded bakery.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Thursday promoted Paul Stombaugh to VP/corporate controller. 

Stombaugh will take on an expanded role in the company’s decision support and its strategic development. He also will continue to oversee its financial accounting and reporting functions, internal controls, treasury and budgets, Weis reported. He will continue to report to Scott Frost, SVP and CFO.

Weis Markets has re-upped president and CEO David Hepfinger's contract with a new five-year deal, according to an 8-K filing made Wednesday.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets has re-upped president and CEO David Hepfinger's contract with a new five-year deal, according to an 8-K filing made Wednesday. 

The new contract is retroactive to March 1 and supersedes Hepfinger's previous contract enacted March 1, 2010. 

Weis shares were up slightly by 26 cents to $41.02 in mid-morning trading.

Weis Markets on Tuesday reported net income of $82.5 million for the 52-week period ended Dec. 29.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Tuesday reported net income of $82.5 million for the 52-week period ended Dec. 29. Even with one less week of sales, that's up 9.2% versus fiscal 2011, which was a 53-week period, the grocer noted. Sales were down slightly by 1.9% to $2.7 billion compared with the week-longer year-ago period. Comparable sales were down 2%. 

Adjusting for the 52-week to 53-week comparison, the grocer's 2012 net income increased 13.9% while sales and comparable store sales were flat.

In his new position, Seipp will oversee the day-to-day merchandising, operation and management of Weis Markets’ 131 pharmacies. He will also oversee the company’s Lifestyle Initiatives’ team, which focuses on health and wellness issues.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Friday announced the launch of its 10th round of price freezes, effective in all 163 store locations. 

More than 2,000 products have been reduced in price and will stay at these discounted levels for 90 days. Since the company began its price freezing initiative in January 2009, Weis customers have saved more than $40 million dollars, the grocer stated.

Information technology vet Shirl Stroeing joined Weis Markets earlier this week as the company's VP and chief information officer, according to published reports.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Information technology vet Shirl Stroeing joined Weis Markets earlier this week as the company's VP and chief information officer, according to published reports. 

Stroeing makes the move from Supervalu, where she was VP service management and operations support. 

Stroeing succeeds Bob Mawyer, who departed Weis earlier this year, and will report to Scott Frost, Weis SVP, CFO and treasurer.

Weis Markets has closed on its purchase of three former Genuardi's stores and is slated to reopen them this weekend.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets has closed on its purchase of three former Genuardi's stores and is slated to reopen them this weekend.

In advance of these store openings on June 16, located in Conshohocken, Doylestown and East Norristown, Pa., Weis said it will reopen each store's pharmacy Monday at 12 noon to minimize prescription service disruption.

Weis added that it has hired 218 former Genuardi employees and has added 150 positions, which will allow each store to double the number of cashiers it employs and increase front-end service.

Weis Markets on Thursday announced it has begun the construction of an environmentally innovative 65,000-sq.-ft. superstore in Fogelsville, Pa.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Thursday announced it has begun the construction of an environmentally innovative 65,000-sq.-ft. superstore in Fogelsville, Pa.

When construction is completed, the store is expected to achieve U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification for measurably reducing or mitigating its environmental impact for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, material selection and indoor environmental quality.

The Fogelsville unit will be Weis Markets’ first LEED-certified store.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Thursday announced it will invest $125 million in its 2012 growth program, a 25% increase compared with 2011.

"Our budget includes two new stores and 18 major remodels," Weis Markets vice chairman Jonathan Weis said. "In addition, we expect to soon complete the purchase of three Genuardi's units near Philadelphia which we hope to reopen later this summer."

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Tuesday named Joseph Douglas the grocer's VP pharmacy.

Douglas will oversee the day-to-day merchandising, operation and management of Weis Markets’ 122 pharmacies and also will direct the company’s lifestyle initiatives’ team, which focuses on health-and-wellness issues. Douglas will report to Kurt Schertle, SVP sales and merchandising.

Douglas was a 27-year Walgreens veteran, where he was VP transforming community practice.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets earlier this week named Regina Tator as its director of private brands. 

Tator succeeds Bruno Garisto, who was recently named VP center store sales and merchandising. Tator will oversee the product development and sales and marketing for the company’s 6,300 private-brand products, including center store, healthy and beauty care, and perishable private products.
