Consumer Reports has ranked Wegmans No. 1 in its list of supermarkets across the country with a score of 88, according to a report in USA Today published Thursday.

ARLINGTON, Va. — Consumer Reports has ranked Wegmans No. 1 in its list of supermarkets across the country with a score of 88, according to a report in USA Today published Thursday. Publix ranked No. 3 with a score of 85. Costco, Hy-Vee, Harris Teeter and H-E-B also made the top 10 list. 

Wegmans, along with Trader Joe's, was rated best among employee courtesy and checkout speed.

The supermarket pharmacy is advertising the service as a cheaper alternative to the prices paid at the veterinarian for the same canine/feline pharmaceuticals. Using Heartgard Plus Chew as an example, Wegmans noted that the common vet pricing is $50.20. Wegmans sells the same prescription for $44.99 and a generic equivalent for $19.99.

During the fall 2013 checkout scanning campaign at 47 Wegmans stores, hunger relief donations soared to a record $1.6 million, a 14% increase over the fall 2012 total, the grocer reported.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — During the fall 2013 checkout scanning campaign at 47 Wegmans stores in Maryland, New Jersey, the Greater Rochester region of New York , Eastern Pennsylvania and Virginia, hunger relief donations soared to a record $1.6 million, a 14% increase over the fall 2012 total, the grocer reported. 

“We’re grateful to our customers and employees for recognizing the vital role that food banks play in communities,” Linda Lovejoy, Wegmans community relations manager, said. “These results are a testament to remarkable generosity.”

Not only will Wegmans process a refill online, they will now ship it to a verified patient anywhere in the United States. So seniors who head south for the winter can now maintain continuity with filling their prescriptions through the same pharmacy. 

Standard delivery (five to 10 business days) is free; express delivery (one to two days) is $18.95.

Supermarket chain Wegmans took the time last week to issue a clarification following local news reports: It would not be ending healthcare benefits for its part-time employees. A story in the Buffalo News had a headline, "Wegmans cuts health benefits for part-time workers," that had been misconstrued.

It's no secret why Wegmans — which operates 81 stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts — is included in Fortune magazine's list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For."

"The Buffalo News story was accurate in reporting that benefits would continue to be provided, but eligibility requirements would change," Wegmans stated in a release. "Even so, many outlets reported otherwise."

Among retailers, Wegman's Food Markets came in at fifth place, with 8.3% job growth. Nugget Market, a supermarket chain based in Sacramento, Calif., ranked 37th; Whole Foods ranked 71st; and Publix Super Markets ranked 77th.
