WASHINGTON — New research released Tuesday found that when it comes to treating pain, a growing number of consumers know how to safely use medicines with acetaminophen and to avoid accidental overdose and liver damage. A nationwide consumer survey conducted by the Consumer Healthcare Products Association Educational Foundation, in conjunction with its work on the Acetaminophen Awareness Coalition’s Know Your Dose educational campaign, shows that consumer safe use knowledge and risk awareness has increased over a three year period (2010-2013).

However, the Task Force concluded there is not enough evidence to determine the effectiveness of taking vitamins and minerals to prevent cardiovascular disease or cancer.

WASHINGTON — In most exchange plans, consumers will face paying a percentage of the costs — often called co-insurance — rather than fixed-dollar co-payments for many specialty medications used to treat rare and complex diseases. According to a new Avalere Health analysis, some plans require enrollees to pay 50% of the specialty drug’s cost. If exchange plans use coinsurance for specialty medications, patients may incur several thousands of dollars of cost-sharing for high-cost drugs before reaching the out-of-pocket maximum.

The change, which limits standalone PDP sponsors to one basic and one enhanced plan per region, was proposed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in a January proposed regulation.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment Situation report showed that January total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 113,000, with the unemployment rate at 6.6% and the labor force participation rate at 63%.
