Like all of Walgreens' flagships, the new Los Angeles store pushes the envelope on what consumers would expect to find in a typical drug store. In this segment of DSNTV Virtual Store Tours, DSN editor Rob Eder travels to Hollywood to meet with key members of Walgreens' merchandising and store design teams for a firsthand look at the new store.

In December, Walgreens celebrated a major milestone when it opened store No. 8,000 in Los Angeles at the famed corner of Sunset and Vine. The store, Walgreens first West Coast-based flagship location, is the site of the former Tower Record store and perhaps more notably, the site of the former Schwab's drug store, where such Hollywood starlets as Lana Turner are rumored to have been discovered.

The Obama administration recently stressed the importance of increasing coverage of HIV treatment, as well as increasing access to HIV testing and counseling. It's an initiative that Walgreens, with more than 700 HIV-specialized pharmacies and over 2,000 pharmacists with special HIV/AIDS-accredited educational training, follows closely. Earlier this month, Walgreens announced that immunization records would be sent directly from its more than 7,800 Walgreens and Duane Reade stores and 350 Take Care Clinics to primary care providers over Surescripts’ electronic prescribing network using Surescripts’ Clinical Interoperability services. And later this year, the company plans to share immunization data with local and state public health agencies, and share Take Care Clinic patient summaries with primary care providers. Drug Store News recently had the opportunity to speak with Surescripts president and CEO Harry Totonis about the new service.

Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy in late February released data showing that both patients and their health plans can realize savings of up to 60% on the cost of infused specialty medications by choosing alternate treatment sites, such as the ones fielded by Walgreens. On Sunday, Jan. 1, Walgreens' contract with Express Scripts expired, and millions of Walgreens customers covered by ESI were forced to either move their pharmacy business to another pharmacy in the Express Script network or come up with some other way to stick with Walgreens. ARLINGTON, Va. — A top executive of Sears and Kmart is among the retail executives appointed to the board of directors of a retail industry lobbying group.

The Retail Industry Leaders Association announced Wednesday the appointment of Sears Holdings Corp. president for Sears and Kmart, EVP and chief merchandising officer Ron Boire. Other executives include CEOs of The Home Depot, 7-Eleven, Petco Animal Supplies and J.C. Penney Co.

Walgreens, together with Chicago-based solar developer SoCore Energy, announced on Wednesday that they will build more than 200 new solar installations at Walgreens stores throughout California, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.

This latest expansion will bring the number of completed solar installations at Walgreens stores to more than 350, making the company the leading retailer in number of solar powered stores.

WALGREENS — Walgreens and Greater Than AIDS are teaming with health departments and local AIDS organizations across the country to provide free HIV testing in support of National HIV Testing Day, June 27, according to a release from The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.

This marks the third consecutive year Walgreens has teamed with Greater Than AIDS and local organizations to help bring free HIV testing to communities. This year, more than three times the number of stores and testing partners are participating compared with 2012.
