Building on its government affairs and public policy department, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores has hired Christopher Smith, formerly with the National Community Pharmacists Association, as director of federal public policy.

ARLINGTON, Va. — Building on its government affairs and public policy department, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores has hired Christopher Smith, formerly with the National Community Pharmacists Association, as director of federal public policy. 

Smith will report to Kevin Nicholson, VP public policy and regulatory affairs. Smith started his new role with NACDS on Aug. 27.

Giant, owned by Ahold USA, announced the recent opening of three new locations, in Bowie, Md., Sterling, Va., and Chevy Chase, Md.

CVS Caremark’s MinuteClinic has opened its first clinic inside a CVS/pharmacy store in Southwest Virginia with five additional locations planned for September and October.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Caremark’s MinuteClinic has opened its first clinic inside a CVS/pharmacy store in Southwest Virginia with five additional locations planned for September and October.

With the new opening, there are now 27 MinuteClinic locations in Virginia. The additional clinic locations slated to open in September and October will be in Hollins, Lynchburg, Radford, Roanoke and Salem.

The Specialty Pharmacy Certification Board is requesting that applicants for its credentialing program for specialty pharmacists send in their applications by Sept. 15, the group said Friday.

The SPCB said the due date applies to the first round of Certified Specialty Pharmacy tests, which will be administered in October, and pharmacists can apply online for the test.

Dollar Tree generated 3.7% in same-store sales for its second quarter ended Aug. 3, beating analyst estimates, and recorded $1.9 billion in consolidated net sales, an 8.8% increase.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Dollar Tree generated 3.7% in same-store sales for its second quarter ended Aug. 3, beating analyst estimates, and recorded $1.9 billion in consolidated net sales, an 8.8% increase. 

Shares of Dollar Tree closed Thursday at $53.13, 88 cents higher than the previous close.

NEW YORK — An organization founded to help patients improve their health through personalized care from pharmacists and reduce health costs is closing.

In a statement on its website, RxAlly said its board had voted to close the company, effective Friday after 18 months in operation. Calls to the organization were not answered.

Aetna has announced a new pilot program, dubbed the Aetna Rx Home Success Program, which is supported by CVS Caremark.

HARTFORD, Conn. and WOONSOCKET, R.I. — Aetna has announced a new pilot program, dubbed the Aetna Rx Home Success Program, which is supported by CVS Caremark.

The Aetna Rx Home Success Program works with CVS Caremark pharmacists and Dovetail Health to support Aetna members who are taking multiple medications. The program helps members manage their health through personal support from a pharmacist — including offering in-home consultations — and focuses on those who have recently been discharged from a hospital, nursing home or rehabilitation facility.

The 160 products, ranging from health and beauty to seasonal items, were on display in the “Product Showcase” on the exhibit floor.

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield awarded the American Lung Association in Virginia $72,000 as part of a total $1.5 million donation to the American Lung Association by Anthem’s parent company in support of the program.

The Joint Commission of Pharmacy Practitioners and representatives of nursing, medicine, education, pharmacy practice and consumer groups gathered last month at the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria, Va., for the conference, with American Pharmacists Association EVP Thomas Menighan serving as chairman.

The group said that the Roosevelt University College of Pharmacy had endorsed its Specialty Pharmacy Education Center and would accept the source content for academic credit starting this fall.

More than 70% of physicians participate in the state’s medical home program.

Peter Welch, D-Vt., that would allow independent community pharmacies to provide same-day delivery services of diabetes testing supplies to Medicare beneficiaries who are homebound, in long-term care or assisted living facilities.
