Dollar Tree on Wednesday posted sales of $2.2 billion for the fourth quarter ended Feb. 1, down slightly by 0.9%.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Dollar Tree on Wednesday posted sales of $2.2 billion for the fourth quarter ended Feb. 1, down slightly by 0.9%. However, fourth quarter 2012 included 13 weeks as compared to the 12-week period for fiscal 2013. 

For fiscal year 2013, the company's consolidated net sales were $7.8 billion, up 6.1%. Comparable store sales increased 2.4%. Fiscal 2012 included 53 weeks, as compared with 52 weeks in fiscal 2013.

Comparable store sales increased 1.2%.

Fred's Super Dollar on Wednesday reported a 1% increase in total sales, to $151.5 million, for the four weeks ended Nov. 30. Comparable-store sales for the month were flat versus a decline of 3.6% in the same period last year.

"The environment was as competitive as expected, and the later Thanksgiving holiday had a negative impact on sales," noted Bruce Efird, Fred's CEO. "As anticipated, our pharmacy department continued to perform well during the month," he said.

"The investments in pharmacy growth have been validated by the 8% increase in its total department sales," said Bruce Efird, Fred's CEO. "Notably, our pharmacy department accounted for more than 40% of total company sales during the quarter.

The company reported consolidated net sales for the quarter of $1.9 billion, a 9.5% increase from $1.72 billion for the year-ago quarter. Comparable store sales increased 3.1%.

Fred's sales increased to $177.3 million in September, the discount store chain said Thursday.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Fred's sales increased to $177.3 million in September, the discount store chain said Thursday.

The Memphis, Tenn.-based company, which operates 702 stores in the South, said the monthly sales figures represented a 4% increase over September 2012. Same-store sales increased by 2.8%, compared with a 3.8% decrease last year.

For the year to date, sales were $1.3 billion, a 1% increase over $1.3 billion during the same period last year. Same-store sales increased by 0.8%, compared with a 1.2% decrease last year.

Fred's Super Dollar posted sales of $140 million for the four weeks ended Aug. 31. Sales were $139.9 million in the year-ago period.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred's Super Dollar on Wednesday posted sales of $140 million for the four weeks ended Aug. 31. Sales were $139.9 million in the year-ago period. 

Comparable-store sales for the month were approximately flat versus a decline of 2.8% in the same period last year.

"Sales were adversely affected by an unfavorable calendar shift, with no first of the month in fiscal August," stated Bruce Efird, Fred's CEO. "Despite this shift, several departments performed well in August, most notably pharmacy," he said.

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General on Wednesday posted net sales of $4.4 billion for the second quarter ended Aug. 2, up 11.3%. 

“Dollar General delivered another solid quarter. Our same-store sales growth for the second quarter of 2013 accelerated to 5.1%," stated Rick Dreiling, Dollar General chairman and CEO. "We are very pleased with the increase in customer traffic in our stores. We continue to grow our market share and believe that our second-quarter results position us well to deliver our financial outlook for the year."

Dollar Tree generated 3.7% in same-store sales for its second quarter ended Aug. 3, beating analyst estimates, and recorded $1.9 billion in consolidated net sales, an 8.8% increase.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Dollar Tree generated 3.7% in same-store sales for its second quarter ended Aug. 3, beating analyst estimates, and recorded $1.9 billion in consolidated net sales, an 8.8% increase. 

Shares of Dollar Tree closed Thursday at $53.13, 88 cents higher than the previous close.

99 Cents Only stores announced on Monday Stéphane Gonthier as the company's new president and CEO. Gonthier is leaving Dollarama, where he was COO since September 2007.

CITY OF COMMERCE, Calif. — 99 Cents Only stores announced on Monday Stéphane Gonthier as the company's new president and CEO. Gonthier is leaving Dollarama, where he was COO since September 2007.

Gonthier’s appointment is expected to become effective in the next 60 days. Interim CEO Richard Anicetti, a successful food retailing executive, will return to his role solely as a member of the board.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred's Inc. today announced that its board of directors has declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.06 per share.

The dividend is payable on June 17, 2013, to shareholders of record as of June 3, 2013.

Fred's Super Dollar reported sales for the five-weeks ended Feb. 2 were up 31% to $173.6 million. Comparable store sales were up 28.6%.

At first blush, there appears to be nothing special about Dollar General’s first Southern California store in the suburb of Montclair. It occupies about 7,500 sq. ft. of space in an aging strip center, and a small banner hung on the exterior beckons to passing motorists and pedestrians, “Now Open.” Inside, more signs explain the bare-bones merchandising of familiar brands to shoppers unfamiliar with the Dollar General value proposition.

Dollar General announced Friday that its landmark store, located in Merced, Calif., has given the retailer a coast-to-coast presence for the first time in the company's history.
