Astellas Pharma US announced the availability of Myrbetriq (mirabegron) extended-release tablets. The drug is used to treat OAB with symptoms of urge urinary incontinence, urgency and urinary frequency. The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug on June 28, 2012.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug for enlarged prostate made by generic drug maker Wockhardt, the company said.

Wockhardt, based in Mumbai, India, announced the approval of alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets in the 10-mg strength, which is designed to treat enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia.

The drug is a generic version of Sanofi's Uroxatral. Various versions of the drug have sales of about $81.5 million, according to IMS Health.

Pfizer announced Friday results of a phase-4 study of Toviaz (fesoterodine fumarate) in the reduction of urge urinary incontinence in patients with OAB who had a less than 50% reduction in UUI when taking Detrol LA (tolterodine tartrate), a commonly prescribed treatment for the condition also made by Pfizer.

The FDA announced the approval of Myrbetriq (mirabegron), which works by relaxing the bladder muscle while the organ is filling. In patients with overactive bladder, the muscle can't be controlled, squeezes too often or squeezes without warning. Symptoms of overactive bladder include the need to urinate too often, the need to urinate immediately and incontinence. The condition affects about 33 million Americans.

Men smoke more (23.2% versus 18.1% of women), drink more (71.6% versus 59.6%) and eat more (40% overweight, 21.5% obese versus 28.6% and 17.6%, respectively). Men die sooner (before the age of 75 years versus age 80 years for women) and are less likely to seek health care on their own (25.3% of men have no usual source of health care versus 13.8% of women).

DEERFIELD, Ill. — A panel of Food and Drug Administration experts has recommended approval for a drug made by Astellas Pharma for overactive bladder.

The drug maker announced that the FDA Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee voted 7-4 with one abstention that its assessment of the risks and benefits of the drug YM178 (mirabegron) supported the drug's approval.

The FDA is not required to follow the recommendations of advisory committees, but usually does. The agency is expected to decide whether or not to approve the drug by June 29.

The 12-week study enrolled 562 elderly people in the United States. The drug already has Food and Drug Administration approval for treating overactive bladder.

Endo said its acquisition of American Medical Systems has boosted the drug maker's devices and services business segment, and the combination of AMS with Endo's existing platform will provide additional cost-effective solutions across the entire urology spectrum.

The company announced its definitive agreement to acquire AMS in a cash transaction valued for approximately $2.9 billion.
