The potential breakthrough for remote-site dispensing and health counseling came in the U.S. House of Representatives. California Democrat Mike Thompson is sponsoring legislation that would eliminate barriers to telemedicine services for all federal health programs.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — In a statement issued on Monday, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores applauded the U.S. Senate for its passage of the “Strengthening and Focusing Enforcement to Deter Organized Stealing and Enhance Safety Act of 2012,” also known as the “Safe Doses Act” (H.R. 4223 and S. 1002).  

The bill passed unanimously in the Senate on Sept. 22, and previously passed in the U.S. House of Representatives on June 26.

Eder, who presented on current retail trends in homeopathic remedy sales, Americans’ growing interest in self-care and implications for U.S. health care, also moderated a panel discussion of experts, including AAHP president Mark Land and legal counsel Al Lorman, as well as Wayne Jonas, president and CEO of

With strong support from pharmacy leaders, Congress is moving to shut down prescription medication abuse and diversion with a multipronged legislative cudgel.

Prior to its October recess, the U.S. House of Representatives passed three industry-backed bills in September to help seal up the nation’s leaky prescription drug pipeline. The bills are expected to pass under “suspension of the rules,” which allows for expedited consideration of legislation.
