With private label across analgesics up an estimated 11.3% to $1.7 billion, retailers are going to need to make some tough decisions as two internal analgesic powerhouses — McNeil's Tylenol and Novartis' Excedrin — make their way back onto market after respective recalls.

Within internal analgesic tablets, sales of store brand equivalents were up 15% off of a 2011 base of around $1.2 billion. The branded competition also were benefactors — both Pfizer's Advil and Bayer's Aleve generated more than $50 million in incremental sales on top of 2011 sales.

"I’m very pleased with the progress that we’re making in that," he said. "We mentioned to you that the consent decree that we had designed in conjunction with the FDA was approved and reviewed in October, with very few comments. And given the breadth and scale of that agreement, we felt very good about that. We’ve had teams working hard since then.

NEW YORK — CVS/pharmacy has decided to stock Tylenol pain reliever in only half of its stores, according to a Reuters report published Monday. 

According to the report, CVS will stock Tylenol in each market, but not in each store as CVS seeks to plug any out-of-stock holes left behind by the initial recall of Tylenol three years ago and the brand's slow trek back to shelf.

In addition, road blocks to savings, such as reimbursement of OTC medicines under flexible spending accounts, were recently put in place with the new requirement that those medicines now to be prescribed by a physician in order to qualify for reimbursement. Approximately 1-in-5 respondents have used FSAs to purchase OTC drugs or nutritional supplements in the past, the report noted.

WASHINGTON — A new continuing-education program offered by a national pharmacist professional organization aims to prepare pharmacists to communicate with patients about the safe and effective use of the painkiller acetaminophen.

The American Pharmacists Association said its new CE program would allow pharmacists to outline the Food and Drug Administration's recent advisory panel meetings on the drug, communicate with patients about its appropriate use, and engage consumers in dialogue and such activities as reading labels of products containing acetaminophen.

The U.S. over-the-counter drug market saw strong growth in 2011, thanks to switches of prescription drugs to OTC, gains in the allergy relief products category and holistic marketing, according to a new report from Kline.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — The U.S. over-the-counter drug market saw strong growth in 2011, thanks to switches of prescription drugs to OTC, gains in the allergy relief products category and holistic marketing, according to a new report from Kline.

According to the international consulting and research firm's Nonprescription Drugs USA 2011 report, at the manufacturers' level, the U.S. OTC drug market posted a gain of 2.4%, reaching $21.4 billion in 2011.

McNeil's Infants' Tylenol SimpleMeasure includes a dosing syringe, which a parent or caregiver inserts into a protective cover, or “flow restrictor,” at the top of the bottle to measure the proper dose. In some cases, the flow restrictor was pushed into the bottle when inserting the syringe.

NEW YORK — It seems that Tylenol Cold & Flu Severe caplets are making their way back to store shelves, according to published reports.

According to several reports, McNeil Consumer Healthcare spokeswoman Bonnie Jacobs confirmed that the product, which is designated for adult use, will begin shipping this week.

McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, recalled several lots of Tylenol products due to reports of uncharacteristic odor, which was linked to the presence of trace amounts of a chemical known as 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA).

McNeil Consumer Healthcare on Tuesday initiated another recall at the retail level of one product lot (60,912 bottles) of Tylenol extra strength caplets in 225-count bottles because of a small number of odor reports, including a musty, moldy odor.

The uncharacteristic musty, moldy odor has been linked to the presence of trace amounts of a chemical known as 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA).

The product lot number (ABA619) for the recalled product can be found on the side of the bottle label. The recalled product was manufactured in February 2009.
