BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — Chattem on Thursday announced the launch of Allegra Anti-Itch Cooling Relief Cream and Allegra Anti-Itch Intensive Relief Cream.

"We identified an opportunity in the topical anti-itch category and leveraged our experience with Allegra Allergy to introduce a new product for common skin irritations that not only helps stop the itch but also provides a moisturizing benefit," stated John Stroud, EVP marketing, Chattem. 

FORT WORTH, Texas — A topical medication made by Galderma Labs for treating melasma of the face is now available in pharmacies, Galderma said.

Tri-Luma (fluocinolone acetonide 0.01%, hydroquinone 4%), tretinoin 0.05%) is described as the only Food and Drug Administration-approved triple combination topical product for the short-term treatment of moderate to severe melasma. The chronic skin condition affects more than 7 million people in the United States.

FERNDALE, Mich. — Ferndale Healthcare on Monday announced the launch of RectiCare Anorectal cream, an over-the-counter therapy to help relieve the pain and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids. RectiCare is a topical, local anesthetic that contains 5% lidocaine.

Each tube of RectiCare comes with a supply of "finger cots," little cotton covers that fit over the finger. They promote hygienic application, since the finger doesn't come into contact with the product or the area to which it's being applied, the company stated. 

MIAMI LAKES, Fla. — Fuse Science on Tuesday announced that it has picked up distribution for its EnerJel product — a topical energy product targeting fitness fanatics — to 200 south Florida pharmacies through a partnership with GAT Trading.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Mederma, a maker of scar therapy products, has introduced its new Mederma advanced scar gel, which is designed to reduce the overall appearance of scars caused by injury, acne, surgery or burns with one daily application.

Mederma advanced scar gel is a transparent topical gel that contains Cepalin, the same proprietary botanical extract derived from onions used in all Mederma scar products and stretch marks therapy.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — Actavis has begun shipping clobetasol propionate shampoo and clobetasol propionate lotion, which were granted 180-day marketing exclusivity by the Food and Drug Administration.

The shampoo and topical lotion are generic equivalents of Galderma's Clobex shampoo and Clobex topical lotion, which have garnered sales of $89.9 million for the 12 months ended in September 2011.

SONOMA, Calif. — Forces of Nature on Wednesday introduced its brand called Control, featuring 14 USDA-certified organic and Food and Drug Administration-registered topical medicines that target seven hard-to-treat conditions, including acne, herpes cold sores (caused by the herpes simplex virus) and scars. Each medicine uses a two-in-one approach that merges botanicals with recognized and established homeopathic drugs. The Control line is currently available at select Whole Foods Market stores and is rolling out in independent natural retailers nationwide.

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. — Upsher-Smith Labs has launched a topical medication for itching and inflammation of the skin resulting from such conditions as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, the company said Monday.

Upsher-Smith announced the launch of Trianex (triamcinolone acetonide) ointment, which the company described as a prescription topical corticosteroid that offers the feel of a cream and the strength of an ointment.

INDIANAPOLIS — A topical medication for treating low testosterone in men now is available, drug maker Eli Lilly said.

Lilly announced the availability of Axiron (testosterone), a topical solution designed for application under the arm.

The Food and Drug Administration approved Axiron in November, making it the only testosterone replacement therapy applied to the underarm.

HUDDINGE, Sweden — Meda has launched a new cold sore treatment made by commercialization partner Medivir, Medivir said Tuesday.

The Swedish drug maker launched Xerese (acyclovir and hydrocortisone), a topical combination product designed to treat recurrent herpes simplex labialis.

Medivir said the U.S. market for cold sore products is $230 million, and it expected the drug to be successful, given Meda’s presence in the U.S. market.

RHINEBECK, N.Y. Topical BioMedics on Monday announced additional distribution through The Vitamin Shoppe of its Topricin line of homeopathic topical analgesics.

The Vitamin Shoppe is carrying classic Topricin in its retail stores, and is offering Topricin Foot Therapy cream to customers via its website.
