Walmart is gearing up to open a Neighborhood Market store this month in Midwest City, Okla.

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. — Walmart is gearing up to open a Neighborhood Market store this month in Midwest City, Okla.

The 40,000-sq.-ft. format will offer customers quick access to low-cost groceries, prescriptions and household products. The store officially will open its doors on Sept. 21.

As previously reported, Walmart president and CEO Bill Simon said that the Neighborhood Market format is being rebranded as Walmart Market.

PITTSBURGH — GNC on Monday announced that it again is partnering with the Western Pennsylvania Committee of the Wounded Warrior Project as lead sponsor of its annual golf outing to be held Sept. 19 at the Diamond Run Golf Club in Sewickley, Pa.

The charity event is designed to raise public awareness and funding for severely wounded servicemen and women to help them recover and transition back to civilian life. To date, GNC has helped raise more than $340,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project to support its programs and services.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid's philanthropic arm is donating $50,000 to Hurricane Irene relief efforts, Rite Aid said Wednesday.

The retail pharmacy chain said the Rite Aid Foundation was making the donation to the American Red Cross, in addition to donations of baby formula, personal hygiene products, first aid and cleaning supplies to several nonprofit organizations in New York and Vermont — areas that were particularly affected by the hurricane.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — After ending its five-week fundraising campaign to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association's efforts to develop treatments and assist people coping with neuromuscular diseases, Safeway announced that its stores raised $10.4 million for the organization.

The campaign, which ran from Aug. 1 through Labor Day, marked Safeway's 10th annual fundraising effort. Safeway has raised more than $58 million for muscular dystrophy charities.

NEW YORK — Former Duane Reade CFO William Tennant was sentenced to three years of probation for his securities fraud conviction in June 2010, according to published reports.

Tennant, convicted of one count of securities fraud, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Deborah Batts in a hearing Tuesday in a Manhattan federal court.

Tom Thumb, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kroger, on Friday announced its purchase of seven convenience stores in the Memphis area currently operated by Schnuck Markets.

MEMPHIS — The Memphis-based Kroger Delta Division, a division of Kroger on Friday announced its purchase of eight Memphis-area Schnucks stores. In addition, Kroger has acquired seven convenience stores that will be remodeled under the Kwik Shop banner and will be operated by Tom Thumb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kroger. The Schnucks grocery stores will be converted and re-opened under the Kroger name over the next few weeks.

Fey, 57, has been VP merchandising for the company's Michigan division. He succeeds Donna Giordano, who was recently promoted to president of the Ralphs division in California.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway on Tuesday announced its offering of flu shots in its grocery stores — positioning its flu season inoculation as more convenient to drug stores.

"Safeway makes getting a flu shot more convenient than most other retailers offering immunizations, because consumers visit grocery stores on a regular basis," the supermarket chain stated. "In an average month, 49% of those surveyed said they visit grocery stores most often, compared [with] 8% who said they visit drug stores most often."

MINNEAPOLIS — Target announced its commitment to assist with Hurricane Irene relief efforts through a donation totaling $250,000 in cash and products.

The retailer said that the donations will be distributed among such relief agencies as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. What's more, Target also is giving gift cards and 10,000 relief kits — which include bottled water, soap, deodorant, toothpaste and nonperishable food items — to several local, regional and national nonprofits.

Same-store sales at Rite Aid increased by 2.5% for the month of August compared with August 2010, the retail pharmacy chain said Thursday.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Same-store sales at Rite Aid increased by 2.5% for the month of August compared with August 2010, the retail pharmacy chain said Thursday.

This included a 2.9% increase in front-end same-store sales — including 1.5% coming from sales related to Hurricane Irene — and a 2.3% increase in pharmacy same-store sales, offset by 132 basis points, due to new generic introductions.

Franklin Brown, the former vice chairman at Rite Aid, was freed from jail on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Franklin Brown, the former vice chairman at Rite Aid, was freed from jail on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

Brown, who was initially sentenced to 10 years in prison for taking part in a $1.6 billion accounting scandal, was released following a resentencing hearing. He served six years of his sentence. An appeals court overturned Brown's sentence in May, AP said.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Sam's Club is offering free diabetes health screenings for both adults and children on Sept. 10, the retailer announced.

The free screenings will be held in Sam's Club pharmacies nationwide from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include glucose, A1C, blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) tests. Glucose tests are not available, however, in Tennessee, Maryland and Hawaii, Sam's Club noted.
