Through infographics and animation, the latest video illustrates why supermarkets have experienced a one percent net profit margin consistently over the last 30 years compared to other industries.

WASHINGTON — The Food Marketing Institute, a plaintiff in the litigation against the Federal Reserve’s interpretation of debit reforms legislated by Congress under the Durbin Amendment, on Friday urged the Appeals Court to agree with U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon’s July 31 decision. 

Judge Leon ruled that the U.S. Federal Reserve had “clearly disregarded” Congress’ intent “by inappropriately inflating all debit card transaction fees by billions of dollars.”

ARLINGTON, Va. — The Food Marketing Institute has appointed Douglas Baker as its VP private brands.

With nearly three decades of food retailing and manufacturing experience, Baker will advance FMI’s commitment to investing in brand equity and strengthening the FMI private brands community, FMI stated.

Baker began his career in the food retail industry in 1984, working at Fry’s Food Stores in Arizona.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The retired head of Midwestern supermarket chain Hy-Vee took home the top honor at a recent supermarket industry conference.

The Food Marketing Institute said Monday that it gave its most prestigious honor — the Sidney R. Rabb Award for excellence in serving the consumer, the community and the industry — to retired Hy-Vee chairman and CEO Ric Jurgens at the FMI Midwinter Executive Conference.

FMI gave VP government relations Anne McGhee Curry its Glen P. Woodard, Jr. Award for her work in public affairs over the last three decades. Curry will retire from FMI at the end of this month.

ARLINGTON, Va. — The Food Marketing Institute has appointed Terry Levee to serve as director of food safety programs.

In his new role, Levee will be responsible for developing and implementing programs and activities geared toward helping retail and wholesale food companies meet critical food safety needs, FMI said. Levee will report to VP food safety programs Hilary Thesmar.

Prior to joining FMI, Levee worked at Giant Food/Ahold USA and Winn-Dixie.

ARLINGTON, Va. — The Food Marketing Institute said Tuesday that it has appointed Robert Rosado as director of government relations.

According to FMI, Rosado will focus on legislation that impacts supermarkets in the areas of food safety, health care, food deserts and the 2012 Farm Bill.

“Rob has a broad range of expertise in food and agriculture that will be very helpful to FMI and its members. His background also includes working with federal agencies on many issues related to the food retail industry,” FMI president and CEO Leslie Sarasin said.

The Food Marketing Institute and Grocery Manufacturers Association said that Nutrition Keys, a voluntary front-of-pack nutrition labeling system, will help consumers make healthier choices when purchasing food. Front-of-pack nutrition labels place important nutrition information (i.e., calories, fat, saturated fat and sodium) where they can't be dismissed or ignored.
