PHOENIX — The Apothecary Shops has a new name, the specialty pharmacy provider said Monday.

The Phoenix-based company, which operates specialty pharmacy chain with 18 locations in eight states, said it had changed its name to Avella Specialty Pharmacy and that the name change would take effect at all physical store locations and business operations by Aug. 1.

PHOENIX — The Apothecary Shops are rebranding to become Avella Specialty Pharmacy, effective in August, the company announced Wednesday.

"We are rebranding to establish a single entity that more accurately represents the evolution of our company," stated Keith Cook, president of Avella Specialty/Apothecary Shops. "In doing so, we anticipate it will be easier for customers and partners to communicate with us."

PHOENIX — Specialty pharmacy provider The Apothecary Shops has inked a deal with Pfizer to distribute a new drug for treating kidney cancer.

The specialty provider announced Wednesday that Pfizer had granted it distribution rights for Inlyta (axitinib), which the Food and Drug Administration approved on Jan. 27 for advanced renal cell carcinoma in patients who have failed one systemic therapy.

PHOENIX — Specialty pharmacy provider The Apothecary Shops made a big jump in Inc. magazine's list of the country's fastest-growing private companies, the chain said Wednesday.

The Apothecary Shops ranked No. 1,640 in the annual "Inc. 5000" list, 754 spots higher than in 2010, and 1,076 higher than in 2009.

"The fact that we continue moving up on the 'Inc. 5000' list reflects the focus, hard work and commitment of our entire team, especially in a struggling economy," Apothecary Shops president Keith Cook said.

NEW YORK — Leaders in specialty pharmacy gathered in New York on Tuesday at the New York Athletic Club to attend the second annual Specialty Pharmacy Roundtable discussion presented by Drug Store News and Armada Health Care.

David Galardi, co-founder of Apogenics Inc., moderated the robust panel, which was comprised of Nick Calla of Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy, John Musil of The Apothecary Shops, Tim Kaplan of Amber Pharmacy, Jeanne Ann Stasny of Walmart Specialty Pharmacy and Albert Thigpen of CVS Caremark, among others.

PHOENIX The Apothecary Shops, a Phoenix-based chain of specialty pharmacies with 16 locations in six states, has acquired the Greater Sacramento Specialty Pharmacy.

GSP, which provides services to patients and practitioners in California, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, Idaho and Montana, will be a wholly owned subsidiary of The Apothecary Shops and will continue operating under the Greater Sacramento Specialty Pharmacy name. The acquisition of GSP bolsters the oncology specialty business for The Apothecary Shops. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
