The University of Texas is launching a certification program for pharmacy technicians, the school said.

AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas is launching a certification program for pharmacy technicians, the school said.

The university's Professional Development Center, part of its Division of Continuing and Innovative Education, will begin classes in February. Students in the 14-week program, which includes a 120-hour internship at a local pharmacy, will learn the skills needed to work as pharmacy technicians, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

CVS Caremark’s MinuteClinic has prepared all of its Texas-based clinics for an increased demand for the meningococcal vaccine for bacterial meningitis following a bill signed into law last May, whereby Texas will become the first state in the country to require that all college students receive one dose or booster of the meningococcal vaccine for bacterial meningitis.

Dr Pepper TEN is out to change that. The beverage is a full-flavored carbonated soft drink, but contains only ten calories. With its gunmetal gray color scheme, industrial rivets and bold font, the packaging reads “masculine.”

LUBBOCK, Texas — Texas-based supermarket operator United Supermarkets has teamed up with FlavoRx to roll out the Fillmaster Plus dispensing technology at all of the chain's pharmacies.

Fillmaster Plus is a pharmacy device that automates drug reconstitution. How it works: When a prescription bottle is scanned using the Fillmaster Plus, the unit displays the medication's name, volume, strength and the amount of purified water it needs for reconstitution. This process reduces the risk of dispensing errors and reconstitution is completed in a matter of seconds, FlavoRx said.

The Pharma Letter reported that Sens. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., and Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, had urged the "super committee" to support a bill that would ban settlements that include any form of payment in exchange for holding off launch of a generic drug.

The toilet paper roll covers, which are available online at RespectTheRoll.com and through Cottonelle’s Facebook page, have been produced in three colorful designs and have been a hit with consumers.


At the height of website traffic, more than 72 requests per minute have been recorded for the covers. Through the Facebook page, Kimberly-Clark is giving away 25,000 additional roll covers. Roll covers will be on sale online for $4 each starting Nov. 1.

But despite the exposure of the study’s author — and outbreaks of preventable diseases among children in the United States and Europe, thanks to parents who opted to have their kids vaccinated — it appears that sowing fear of childhood vaccines still appears to have some currency.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new strength for a psychiatric drug made by Edgemont Pharmaceuticals, Edgemont said Tuesday.

The drug maker announced the approval of a 60 mg dose of fluoxetine tablets, a treatment for major depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa and panic disorder. The drug was originally marketed under the brand name Prozac.

Democratic Rep. Target said that a $25,000 cash donation was made to the American Red Cross with the additional cash and product donations — including 12,000 bottles of water, 3,600 bottles of Gatorade, 500 boxes of snacks, clothing, diapers, toiletries and bedding — made to other nonprofit organizations in the Texas area.

Specialty pharmacy provider Assured Pharmacy had sales of $4.17 million in second quarter 2011, a 5.3% increase over second quarter 2010, the company said Tuesday in an earnings report.

FRISCO, Texas — Specialty pharmacy provider Assured Pharmacy had sales of $4.17 million in second quarter 2011, a 5.3% increase over second quarter 2010, the company said Tuesday in an earnings report.

Assured, which specializes in medicines to treat chronic pain, said the sales increase was primarily a result of a 7.7% increase in prescriptions filled compared with second quarter 2010.

The sales increase narrowed losses by 31.1% to $292,766 from $425,176 in second quarter 2010.
