GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — The Dollar General Literacy Foundation on Thursday awarded more than $2.5 million in grants to approximately 650 schools, nonprofits and literacy organizations to support youth literacy programs.

"Youth literacy grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation are awarded at the beginning of the academic year to help make a distinct impact on the communities we serve by supporting programs that improve education and enhance literacy," stated Rick Dreiling, Dollar General's chairman and CEO.

Fred's Super Dollar on Wednesday announced that its board has declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.06 per share.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred's Super Dollar on Wednesday announced that its board has declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.06 per share. 

The dividend is payable on Sept. 16, 2013, to shareholders of record as of Sept. 2, 2013.

Fred's operates 697 discount general merchandise stores, including 21 franchised Fred's stores, in the southeastern United States.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred's posted a boost in sales for both the month of July and the second quarter, and noted that pharmacy experienced both comparable sales and scripts increases for the second-consecutive month.

Fred's total sales for the month increased 4% to $142.2 million from $136.8 million in the year-ago period. Same-store sales for the month increased 2.5% on top of an increase of 1.2% in the same period last year.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A developer of revenue and payment cycle management and clinical information exchange software is expanding its payment network.

Emdeon announced Friday that it would expand the capabilities of the Emdeon Payment Network, a large, automated payment distribution system for the healthcare industry. The expansion includes the recent opening of a new 100,000-sq.-ft. facility in St. Louis dedicated to supporting the network, which currently reaches about 60,000 pharmacies, 500,000 providers, 81,000 dentists, 1,200 hospitals and 300 labs.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — MinuteClinic has made a deal with a Tennessee healthcare system to expand clinics in three counties in the state, the CVS Caremark clinics division said Wednesday.

MinuteClinic has a partnership with Parkridge Health System, itself a division of HCA/TriStar, to have Parkridge physicians serve as medical directors for seven walk-in clinics. The clinics operate inside CVS stores in Chattanooga, Hixson and Signal Mountain, Tenn., as well as a new location in Cleveland, Tenn., which opened last week.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Emdeon has bought a company that provides pharmacy benefit and related services to state Medicaid agencies, Emdeon said.

Emdeon announced the acquisition of Goold Health Systems. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"The acquisition expands Emdeon's position in the government pharmacy benefit administration market while enhancing our existing pharmacy benefit operations," Emdeon EVP pharmacy services Kevin Mahoney said.

Dollar General increased net sales by 8.5% to $4.2 billion for its first quarter ended May 3, the dollar operator reported Tuesday.

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General increased net sales by 8.5% to $4.2 billion for its first quarter ended May 3, the dollar operator reported Tuesday. 

“For the quarter, we achieved same-store sales growth of 2.6%, reflecting strong growth in our consumables categories offset by softer sales in seasonal and weather-sensitive categories,” stated Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “We believe the continued strength in consumables is a sign of the underlying health of our business.”

Dollar General announced it would match the $2,000 donation that NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Brian Vickers made to Clot Connect. Vickers was diagnosed in early 2010 with blood clots that forced him to miss the remainder of the season and worked with University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill physicians and Clot Connect to make informed decisions on his healthcare.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred's Super Dollar on Thursday reported total sales of $190.4 million for the five weeks ended April 6, down 2% from the comparable year-ago period. 

Comparable store sales for the month decreased 3% compared with flat store sales in the same period last year.
