A U.S. Air Force master sergeant has been named the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board's Certified Pharmacy Technician of the Year, the PTCB said.

WASHINGTON — A U.S. Air Force master sergeant has been named the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board's Certified Pharmacy Technician of the Year, the PTCB said.

The PTCB announced that master sergeant Jessica Hughes, the non-commissioned officer in charge of pharmacy support at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, in New Jersey, was selected as the PTCB CPhT of the Year. The finalists also included Rico Powell and Linda Henson.

Given the massive changes sweeping the severely stressed U.S. healthcare system and the retail, clinical and hospital pharmacies that serve it, thousands of technicians in those settings are already taking on meatier roles as they fill the void left by pharmacists called on to perform additional clinical services.

More than 55,000 candidates sat for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam in 2010, the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board said Tuesday.

WASHINGTON — More than 55,000 candidates sat for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam in 2010, the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board said Tuesday.

The PTCB said it has certified more than 400,000 pharmacy technicians since 1995.

NEW YORK The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board welcomed a recommendation this week by the National Association of Board of Pharmacy that state boards of pharmacy require pharmacy technicians to have PTCB certification. The NABP will amend its Model Act to recommend that all boards of pharmacy require pharmacy tech certification by 2015.
