Recognizing the importance of meeting the needs of its ethnic beauty shoppers, Target has in recent years been working to bolster its ethnic sets in-store, and that effort continues, as evidenced by a media event held Tuesday evening in New York.

The event was held at the Target Studio in New York and served as a showroom to highlight new and existing products, from such ethnic beauty brands as Kinky Curly, Mixed Chicks, Milani, Iman, Camille Rose and Shea Moisture. On hand to greet beauty editors was style expert Tai Beauchamp.

DALLAS — The Network of Executive Women has elected Catherine Lindner, former VP retail marketing for Walgreens, to serve as board chair.

Lindner was elected at the network's annual members meeting at the NEW Leadership Summit on Oct. 22 in Dallas. More than 1,000 industry executives attended the event.

Annie Zipfel, division VP customer marketing for retailer REI, was elected board vice chair. Zipfel most recently served as the network's chair of marketing and communications.

SAN FRANCISCO — Target has announced plans to open its second CityTarget store in San Francisco in October 2013. The company's first CityTarget in San Francisco opened nearly a week ago on Oct. 10.

The San Francisco West CityTarget will be 119,000 sq. ft. and located at the southwest corner of Geary and Masonic Streets.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Target should be feeling confident about its upcoming entry into Canada, as a recent survey from Kantar Retail and TNS Canada revealed that 75% of Canadians are aware of the retailer.

Furthermore, 43% of Canadian consumers said that they were likely to shop at Target Canada for grocery or health and beauty aids and 50% were likely to shop at Target Canada for general merchandise or apparel.

MINNEAPOLIS — Target will roll out QR codes in stores in time for the holiday shopping season. Beginning Oct. 14, each of the chain's top 20 toys will have a QR code that shoppers can scan with their mobile device, allowing them to purchase the toy directly and ship it for free to anyone, anywhere in the U.S. The toys will be promoted with signs featuring the QR codes.

MINNEAPOLIS — Target is slated to open a new store in East Peoria, Ill., making it the first Target store in the city.

The 135,000-sq.-ft. store, which will be part of the 86-acre East Peoria Downtown development, will include a selection of fresh produce, fresh packaged meat and prepackaged baked goods, as well as a Starbucks and a Target pharmacy. The East Peoria Target will open in March 2013.

Target is bringing its REDcard Rewards program to Canada.

TORONTO — Target is bringing its REDcard Rewards program to Canada. The company announced that its Canadian customers will receive an additional 5% off every day when shopping at Target with its REDcard products, which include the Target Debit Card and Target RBC MasterCard. Similar to the REDcard Rewards loyalty program in the United States, the additional savings — which apply to almost everything at Target — will be applied instantly at time of purchase.

MINNEAPOLIS — Target has donated $150,000 in cash and products to assist with Hurricane Isaac relief efforts.

The company said that an additional $20,000 in product donations and $10,000 in Target gift cards will be given to other nonprofit organizations in affected areas for such essentials as water and food. All Target stores in impacted areas are open, and Target has allocated additional products, such as nonperishable food, batteries and flashlights, to those locations to ensure residents have access to the supplies they need.

MINNEAPOLIS — A 4.2% increase in August same-store sales at Target was at the high end of the company's forecast range.

The solid showing during August was noteworthy because it came on top of a prior-year increase of 4.1% and was attributable primarily to an increase in average transaction size. According to Target, about three-fourths of the increase was due to growth in ticket with increase shopper traffic accounting for the remainder of the comp increase.

MINNEAPOLIS — Nobody likes getting a shot, but a new survey indicates that fear of needles also may prompt people to avoid getting flu vaccinations.

Target announced results of a new online survey conducted on its behalf by Harris Interactive showing that 60% of American adults would skip flu vaccinations, with 23% of those avoiding vaccinations because they don't like needles. The survey polled 2,160 adults between July 10 and July 12; no margin of error could be calculated as the survey was not based on a probability sample.
