MINNEAPOLIS — Target is offering free credit monitoring for a year for customers who shop at its stores, the mass merchandise retailer said Monday.

Target said it had contracted with ProtectMyID, a division of Experian, which will offer daily credit monitoring, identity theft insurance and access to assistance from fraud resolution agents, as well as a complimentary credit report. Customers have until April 23 to request an activation code, and then until April 30 to register for credit monitoring through ProtectMyID.

He emphasized that the issue had been "identified and eliminated," while the retailer extended a 10% discount to customers who shopped at its stores on Saturday and Sunday.

According to the EPA, Target's technology center engineering team singlehandedly reduced the company's carbon emissions by 18,000 tons since 2006 and is committed to having 75% of Target buildings certified by the agency's Energy Star program by 2016.

MINNEAPOLIS — Target Corp. has donated $50,000 to assist in relief efforts in the Midwest following a devastating tornado outbreak there earlier this month.

The mass-merchandise retailer's donation includes $45,000 in cash to the American Red Cross and $5,000 to non-profit organizations for relief efforts in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Missouri. In addition, all Target stores in affected areas will remain open.

The results from the quarter reflected a earnings-per-share dilution of 29 cents related to the chain's new Canadian segment. Same-store sales in the U.S. segment grew by 0.9%, near the low end of the company's fiscal 2013 guidance, while total sales were $16.9 billion, up 2% from third-quarter 2012's $16.6 billion.

MINNEAPOLIS — Target Corp. is donating $100,000 to relief efforts in the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan, the mass merchandise retailer said.

Target said it would make the donation to Save the Children, which is working in affected areas to provide support.

"We are deeply saddened by the devastation in the Philippines," Target president and CEO Gregg Steinhafel said. "We hope our donation to Save the Children will provide critical resources and relief to children and families in the Philippines as they recover from Typhoon Haiyan."

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Target is on track to open all the stores it intends to in Canada, the mass merchandise retailer said Monday.

Target aid it would open its remaining 33 stores scheduled for 2013 in November, including the first stores in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland provinces. Thirty-one stores will open on Nov. 13, and the remaining two will open on Nov. 22. The retailer had 124 Canadian store openings planned for the year and said it would announce additional store openings at a later date.

Target said buying DermStore would allow it to expand its share of the online beauty market. The company will continue to operate under its online name, DermStore.com as a separate entity, but it will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Target. CEO Dan Obegi will be president of the subsidiary and will report to Target president of multichannel and SVP enterprise strategy Casey Carl. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

NEW YORK — Target Corp. co-founder Douglas Dayton passed away during the weekend, according to published reports. He was 88.

According to Reuters, Dayton is survived by his wife, Wendy, four children and six grandchildren.

Target began as a family-owned company, merging with the J.L. Hudson department store chain in 1969. Dayton became president of Target in 1961, and senior vice president following the merger. The Dayton Hudson Corp. changed its name to Target in 2000. Dayton left the company in 1974.

Target announced the appointment of Kenneth Salazar to its board. Salazar, who recently began working for the law firm WilmerHale, served as a Democratic member of the Senate from Colorado from 2005 to 2009 and as interior secretary under the Obama administration from 2009 until earlier this year, when he was replaced by Sally Jewell. His appointment to Target's board is effective immediately.

The survey, conducted by Leger Marking, found 22% of western Canadians don't have a kit at home, and 60% lack one in their car, while 58% of people without first aid kits think they have first aid essentials in various locations around the house.
