SALT LAKE CITY — Schiff Nutrition International is scheduled to change its NYSE ticker symbol and, effective June 11, the stock will begin trading under the symbol SHF.

“We are focused on building premium brands and leading innovation in heart health, joint care, immune support, digestive health and other key nutritional supplement conditions," Schiff CEO Tarang Amin said. "We are excited to begin trading under a new ticker symbol NYSE: SHF that more closely reflects our company name.”

Probiotics are fast moving from a “what’s that?” category to a “what’s hot” category. Most people today know the health benefits associated with probiotic use — a 2010 MaCorr Research consumer survey reported that 73% of consumers correctly identified probiotic use, up from only 47% in 2007 — and that’s thanks in large part to the educational efforts of Procter & Gamble with its Align launch two years ago, and prior to that, Danone with its Activia yogurt launch.

That’s what Schiff Nutrition director, president and CEO Tarang Amin told analysts during a conference call Thursday — only four months into his tenure — regarding the predominant industry practice of funding buy-one-get-one promotions for glucosamine and chondroitin supplements.

Ten years ago the word probiotics wasn’t known, and five years ago it was a new word to most Americans. But thanks to the marketing of Activia yogurt by Dannon, which started in 2006, these microorganisms have garnered national attention. After Activia took the dairy market by storm, other foods fortified with probiotics, as well as probiotic supplements, followed suit.


SALT LAKE CITY — Schiff Nutrition on Tuesday announced its $40 million acquisition from Ganeden Biotech of the worldwide exclusive rights to use the probiotic technology GanedenBC30 in the over-the-counter and dietary supplement space, along with the brands Sustenex and Digestive Advantage, under which GanedenBC30 currently is sold.
