Duane Reade has added Smith Electric Vehicles' Newton zero-emission, all-electric commercial trucks to its delivery fleet.

NEW YORK, and KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Duane Reade has added Smith Electric Vehicles' Newton zero-emission, all-electric commercial trucks to its delivery fleet.

With the addition of these medium-duty trucks, Duane Reade is the first retail pharmacy in the United States to choose fleet electrification through a pilot program with Smith Electric Vehicles, a global leader in zero-emission, all-electric commercial vehicles.

The Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania recently recognized Weis Markets for its commitment to recycling and its innovative program to recycle waxed cardboard used to ship and store fresh vegetables and meats, the grocer announced Monday.

SUNBURY, Pa. — The Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania recently recognized Weis Markets for its commitment to recycling and its innovative program to recycle waxed cardboard used to ship and store fresh vegetables and meats, the grocer announced Monday.

In 2010, Weis Markets teamed up with Envirolog to recycle its waxed cardboard and produce Envirolog fireplace logs, which are sold in Weis Markets stores.  Typically, supermarkets send most of their waxed cardboard to landfills since it is difficult to recycle.

Procter & Gamble’s Pantene hair care brand has started producing its new shampoo and conditioner bottles made primarily from plant-based plastic.

CINCINNATI — Procter & Gamble’s Pantene hair care brand has started producing its new shampoo and conditioner bottles made primarily from plant-based plastic.

This material — a first for the hair care industry — is made from sugar cane and will be featured on the Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion collection. The new bottles initially will be launching in Western Europe with expansion plans to the rest of the world over the next two years.

The retailer's Green Things line, which now is available in stores, features household cleaners that are made with plant-based formulas, are biodegradable and pH-neutral, and also are made without such chemicals as 1,4-dioxane, phosphates, dyes or perfumes.

Kellogg's said that nearly half of its facilities worldwide send 5% or less of waste they generate to landfill, an achievement announced in the company's third global corporate responsibility report.

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Kellogg's said that nearly half of its facilities worldwide send 5% or less of waste they generate to landfill, an achievement announced in the company's third global corporate responsibility report.

The company, which released the report on Earth Day, said its reduction in waste sent to landfill was achieved through diligent efforts at each of its facilities, in addition to increased partnerships with recyclers. Overall, Kellogg's has reduced its waste sent to landfill by 51% since 2005, keeping the company on track with its 2015 goal.

Target said that its in-store recycling stations collected and recycled more than 170 million shopping bags, weighing more than 1,800 tons, between April and December 2010.

MINNEAPOLIS — Target said that its in-store recycling stations collected and recycled more than 170 million shopping bags, weighing more than 1,800 tons, between April and December 2010.

The retailer also said that its in-store recycling stations, which were launched to make it easier for guests to recycle common household items, also collected and recycled more than 700 tons of bottles and cans, as well as nearly 2 million units of such small electronics as MP3 players and cell phones during the nine-month period.

Walmart announced it has eliminated more than 80% of the waste that would go to landfills from its operations in California by implementing a comprehensive waste-reduction program. The results far exceed the national average, where the Environmental Protection Agency estimated only 45% of waste is diverted from landfills. The California rate was 65%.

Taking a cue from other beverage makers, Danone Waters of America said it has redesigned its 1.5-liter Evian bottle as part of the company's ongoing effort to reduce its carbon footprint.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Taking a cue from other beverage makers, Danone Waters of America said it has redesigned its 1.5-liter Evian bottle as part of the company's ongoing effort to reduce its carbon footprint.

The new Evian bottle, which reduces the overall carbon footprint by 32%, remains 100% recyclable while using 11% less weight (down to 28.6 g per bottle). The bottle, the company added, is made of up to 50% recycled PET.

CINCINNATI — Procter & Gamble is working toward making its sites LEED-certified as part of the company's long-term sustainability commitment.

Established by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED is the nation's preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. All new P&G sites, including those in the United States, that currently are in the design phase or early construction are working toward achieving LEED certification, P&G said.

RACINE, Wis. — SC Johnson's Ziploc brand is looking to reduce potential product waste by sponsoring a recycling initiative.

Teaming up with Recyclebank, Ziploc will reduce its environmental footprint by sponsoring the nationwide expansion of Recyclebank's rewards-for-recycling platform, which seeks to keep potential waste out of landfills by increasing recycling behavior. The goal is to divert more than 100 million lbs. of waste from landfills within 24 months, the companies said.

Marcal Small Steps paper towels are stronger when wet, while Marcal Small Steps two-ply bath tissue is softer, the company said. An enhancement to Marcal's facial tissues also will be implemented.

CINCINNATI — Procter & Gamble announced that its Auburn, Maine, feminine care facility became the first manufacturing plant in North America to achieve zero waste to landfill.

P&G said its Global Asset Recovery Purchases team assisted the company in reusing or recycling its waste. P&G said these efforts delivered tens of millions of dollars in cost recovery to the company in the past year alone.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A regional supermarket chain's green efforts have paid off.

One year from when Stater Bros. introduced its "Green Waste" composting program, which turns organic waste into compost that is sold to area farmers, the retailer was named the 2010 Waste Reduction Awards Program winner by the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery.
