Vertex Pharmaceuticals has filed for Food and Drug Administration approval of a drug for cystic fibrosis, the company said.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Vertex Pharmaceuticals has filed for Food and Drug Administration approval of a drug for cystic fibrosis, the company said.

Vertex announced the submission to the FDA of an application for approval and priority review of Kalydeco (ivacaftor), which it said was potentially the first medicine to target the underlying cause of cystic fibrosis, namely mutations in the CFTR gene that causes defective or missing CFTR proteins that inhibit the flow of salt and water across cell membranes and lead to mucus buildup.

BLAUVELT, N.Y. — Concepts in Health on Wednesday reported it successfully has defended its MidNite Sleep Remedy patent from possible infringement by Contract Pharmacal, which had been manufacturing a store-brand version.

According to Concepts, Contract Pharmacal agreed to discontinue manufacturing and selling CVS Natural Sleep Aid or any substantially similar product. Additionally, CPC will not challenge the validity or enforceability of the MidNite patent (U.S. Patent 6,703,412).

Brown comes to Emerson from Bayer HealthCare where he held a variety of roles in sales and category management for Bayer’s over-the-counter businesses working with the Walmart account. His primary responsibility was working as category captain to Walmart on the cough, cold and allergy category. Industry experts say growth in the photo department will come from personalized products. “The photo category of the future is in user-generated content,” said Steve Giordano Jr., president of Lucidiom. “Customers should be able to go into a drug store and purchase personalized invitations, banners and thank you notes for a party.”

Retailers, Giordano said, have to go deep in the category to be competitive. That means offering everything from invitations and sticky notes to photobooks.

Glad said that its tall kitchen bags are stronger and use less plastic, and will carry the claims on its packaging. The brand's Glad tall kitchen bags and Glad OdorShield Fresh Scents tall kitchen drawstring bags utilize 6.5% less plastic, the company said. What's more, Glad also touts a 65% recycled kitchen bag, made from 65% recycled plastic, as well as compostable bags that are made with approximately 40% vegetable-based materials so they disintegrate at compost facilities.

Jelly Belly said that consumers who purchase two specially marked bags of Jelly Belly jelly beans or Jelly Bean Chocolate Dips will receive five free photo cards that can be redeemed online to create personalized cards using their own photos or designs. The on-pack consumer promotion launches Jan. 3, 2012 and runs through July.

Mylan said Wednesday that it and Famy Care had entered into an agreement with Warner Chilcott resolving a lawsuit over Femcon Fe (norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol chewable tablets, ferrous fumarate tablets).

PITTSBURGH — Mylan's India-based subsidiary is changing its name, Mylan said Wednesday.

The generic drug maker announced that Matrix Labs, based in Hyderabad, India, had formally changed its name to Mylan Labs.

"We are pleased to complete the name change from Matrix to a Mylan company and are excited to operate in India under one powerful brand," Mylan chairman and CEO Robert Coury said.

Mylan acquired Matrix in 2006.
