Supervalu now is in full turnaround mode, and with the naming of Wayne Sales as CEO to lead the charge, analysts are saying the Canadian retail executive who helped turn around Canadian Tire is the right man for the job. But Supervalu still has plenty of heavy lifting to do.

Supervalu on Monday named Wayne Sales, a Canadian hall-of-fame-caliber retailer, as the company's president and CEO, replacing Craig Herkert.

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu on Monday named Wayne Sales, a Canadian hall-of-fame-caliber retailer, as the company's president and CEO, replacing Craig Herkert.

Supervalu banner Shaw's announced that two of its Rhode Island locations diverted more than 90% of store waste from local landfills as part of the company's zero-waste program.

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — Supervalu banner Shaw's announced that two of its Rhode Island locations diverted more than 90% of store waste from local landfills as part of the company's zero-waste program.

Shaw's said its Barrington and Cranston stores achieved total waste diversion of 90.76% and 90.81%, respectively. In addition to the two new zero-waste stores in Rhode Island, the Shaw's Lancaster, N.H., store also is one of the newest to join the zero-waste program, bringing the company total to eight.

Supervalu pharmacies are offering the pertussis (Tdap) vaccine booster at the majority of its nearly 800 pharmacies, the company announced Tuesday.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Supervalu pharmacies are offering the pertussis (Tdap) vaccine booster at the majority of its nearly 800 pharmacies, the company announced Tuesday.

“We have seen a tremendous increase in the number of cases of whooping cough throughout the country,” stated Chris Dimos, president of Supervalu Pharmacies. “It is strongly recommended from many state health department agencies that all teenagers and adults who have not had the Tdap vaccine get immunized to prevent the spread of this very contagious disease.”

Recall InfoLink is a patented, Web-based product recall management system designed to improve recall efficiency by providing standardized messages, automated communications, inventory tracking and reports for compliance efforts.

Albertsons Market operates more than 200 stores in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, New Mexico and Texas.

Supervalu is expanding its private-label offering to include 2,700 products across more than 100 categories by 2013.

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu is expanding its private-label offering to include 2,700 products across more than 100 categories by 2013.

Essential Everyday products, which are available at approximately 3,300 stores nationwide — including Supervalu's family of stores — currently features more than 1,200 items across more than 40 categories. The expanded Essential Everyday brand lineup was introduced in New York last week by chef and cookbook author Antonia Lofaso.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Supervalu banner Cub Foods has partnered with a local produce grower to provide year-round local produce to locations throughout the Twin Cities.

Produce from BrightFarms' 38,000-sq.-ft. greenhouse will be sold at Cub Foods, which is committed to sourcing more local produce and increasing sustainability. Each year, BrightFarms' St. Paul greenhouse will grow more than 350,000 lbs. of lettuces, tomatoes, and herbs delivered within hours to supermarket shelves. BrightFarms will complete the greenhouse and begin delivering produce in fall 2012.

TORONTO — Canadian retailer Shoppers Drug Mart is looking to acquire 19 retail pharmacies and three central fill pharmacies located in British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba from Paragon for about $75 million in cash.

The completion of the transaction is subject to the approval of Paragon's shareholders, acceptance by the TSX Venture Exchange and certain other customary closing conditions. The transaction is expected to close in third quarter 2012.
