ITASCA, Ill. — Jewel-Osco is looking to support Hunger Action Month by once again launching a campaign that will benefit multiple food banks in Illinois and Indiana.

BOISE — Privately owned Albertsons LLC, which operates more than 200 pharmacies across six states, has named Stewart Edington VP pharmacy operations.

Edington has been with Albertsons stores since 2003, when he was hired as a pharmacy manager and worked in the company’s Phoenix stores. In 2006, Edington joined Albertsons LLC as the division pharmacy manager for the company's Florida stores, a position he has held for the last five years.

That data was made public Thursday, the company announced.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores is gearing up for this year’s Pharmacy & Technology Conference in Boston in late August, an event that will bring together more than 130 retail companies representing more than 80,000 retail outlets.

This year’s conference will take place Aug. 27 to 30 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.

NEW YORK — Financial services firm Credit Suisse tabulated total basket increases of 2.7% year over year and 1% month over month for retail.

“Our monthly pricing survey in Dallas and Chicago showed that all retailers raised prices on a year-over-year and month-over-month basis with the exception of Jewel [a Supervalu banner operating in Chicago],” Credit Suisse research analyst Ed Kelly wrote in a note published Monday.

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu on Tuesday reported first-quarter fiscal 2012 net sales of $11.1 billion (down 3.7% versus last year) and net earnings of $74 million (up 10.4%), or 35 cents per diluted share. Posted net earnings beat the analyst consensus of 33 cents per diluted share.

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu's group VP independent sales, marketing and merchandising is stepping into a new role at the company.

Leon Bergmann will become president of the retailer's independent business organization, Supervalu announced Thursday. Bergmann is replacing Mark Anderson, who is retiring this summer.

CARLISLE, Pa. — The U.S. subsidiary of Dutch supermarket operator Royal Ahold has appointed Raymond McCall SVP pharmacy and health and beauty care, the company said Wednesday.

McCall will be responsible for strategic leadership, direction and business plan design and execution for the pharmacy and health and beauty care teams for Ahold USA, which operates the Giant-Carlisle, Giant-Landover and Stop & Shop chains. He will be based out of the company’s Carlisle, Pa., support office.

ORLANDO — The Network of Executive Women will induct the first group of honorees into the newly created CPG Retail Diversity Hall of Fame on Monday, Sept. 19, as part of the organization’s annual Leadership Summit.

BOISE, Idaho — Albertsons is pulling the plug on its self-checkout units, which will be replaced by standard "H" lanes or express lanes, the grocer has confirmed.

The 217-store grocer that operates in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, New Mexico, Texas and Utah has self-checkout units installed in roughly 100 of its stores. Those units will be removed by the end of the summer.

According to the grocer, the self-checkout units prevent it from providing the level of customer service it wants to offer its shoppers.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — H. D. Smith, the fourth-largest national pharmaceutical wholesaler, on Tuesday named Mark de Bruin to the post of corporate VP managed care.

In his new position at H. D. Smith, 29-year industry veteran de Bruin will be responsible for the company's third party network, creating and maintaining an alliance of prescription and healthcare service providers.
