Weis Markets breaks ground on what's to be grocer's first LEED-certified store

Weis Markets on Thursday announced it has begun the construction of an environmentally innovative 65,000-sq.-ft. superstore in Fogelsville, Pa.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Thursday announced it has begun the construction of an environmentally innovative 65,000-sq.-ft. superstore in Fogelsville, Pa.

When construction is completed, the store is expected to achieve U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification for measurably reducing or mitigating its environmental impact for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, material selection and indoor environmental quality.

The Fogelsville unit will be Weis Markets’ first LEED-certified store.

Weis Markets increases capital budget by 25% to $125 million

Weis Markets on Thursday announced it will invest $125 million in its 2012 growth program, a 25% increase compared with 2011.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Thursday announced it will invest $125 million in its 2012 growth program, a 25% increase compared with 2011.

"Our budget includes two new stores and 18 major remodels," Weis Markets vice chairman Jonathan Weis said. "In addition, we expect to soon complete the purchase of three Genuardi's units near Philadelphia which we hope to reopen later this summer."

Weis Markets' 2011 sales up 5% despite slow recovery

Weis Markets on Monday reported an increase in 2011 sales of 5% to $2.8 billion.

Weis said its comparable sales for the calendar year also were up, increasing 4.2% for 2011, compared with the year-ago period.

Weis to buy three Genuardi's from Safeway

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Monday announced it has entered into an agreement to purchase three Pennsylvania-based Genuardi's stores from Safeway.

"We're extremely pleased to be adding these stores to our store base," Weis Markets president and CEO David Hepfinger said.  "We look forward to serving these communities as the lead local merchant as we have in 33 counties throughout central, eastern and Northeastern Pennsylvania. We will also be reaching out to the associates of these stores to discuss employment with our company."

Weis declares quarterly dividend

Weis Markets announced that its board of directors declared a quarterly dividend of 29 cents per share.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets announced that its board of directors declared a quarterly dividend of 29 cents per share.

The company said the dividend is payable to shareholders of record as of July 18 and payable on Aug. 1.

Weis operates 162 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, New Jersey and West Virginia.

Weis reports positive operating results

Weis Markets on Thursday reported a 7% increase in sales, to $18.6 million, for the 13 weeks ended March 26.

Basic and diluted earnings per share increased 6.2% to 69 cents per share, Weis reported.

Same-store sales were up 0.6%.

Weis posts 2010 sales gain

Weis Markets on Thursday reported an 8.7% increase, to $68.3 million, in its fiscal-year 2010 net income for the 52-week period ended Dec. 25, and said its earnings per share for the year increased 21 cents, to $2.54 per share, compared with the same period a year ago.

The central Pennsylvania grocer reported a sales increase of 4.1% for the year to $2.6 billion. Comparable-store sales were up 1%.

Mignola last year had been named regional VP, overseeing 66 Weis Markets locations in Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia.

Mignola will report to SVP sales and merchandising Kurt Schertle.

SUNBURY, Pa. Weis recently acquired a Medicine Shoppe pharmacy in the Binghamton, N.Y., market, local newscaster News Channel 34 (owned by Newport Television) reported early Tuesday morning.

Weis Markets currently has 120 in-store pharmacies at other locations and is considering more at its Broome County locations, the report noted.
